{"id":5230,"date":"2013-01-03T15:48:21","date_gmt":"2013-01-03T07:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=5230"},"modified":"2013-01-03T15:48:21","modified_gmt":"2013-01-03T07:48:21","slug":"tomic-topples-djokovic-in-hopman-cup-upset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2013\/01\/03\/tomic-topples-djokovic-in-hopman-cup-upset","title":{"rendered":"Tomic topples Djokovic in Hopman Cup upset"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2013\/01\/03\/tomic-topples-djokovic-in-hopman-cup-upset\/attachment\/tomic-hopman-cup-5-460x306\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-5231\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5231\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2013\/01\/Tomic-Hopman-Cup-5-460x306-410x272.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Australian Bernard Tomic feels he has taken an important step in his fledgling tennis career after beating world No.1 Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 in their Hopman Cup clash at Perth Arena on Wednesday night.<\/p>\n<p>Tomic was at his sizzling best during the 84-minute romp, unleashing 25 winners to 12 notch his second career win over Djokovic.<\/p>\n<p>Tomic entered his singles match having lost all three of his ATP matches against Djokovic, including their quarterfinal stoush at Wimbledon in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>The 20-year-old Queenslander did get one over Djokovic in a light-hearted exhibition match at the Kooyong Tennis Classic in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>But his latest victory marks a significant step forward in Tomic\u2019s bid to become a world beater down the track, with a gruelling training program during the off-season already paying dividends.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is especially something I needed before the Australian Open,\u201d Tomic said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m playing the best tennis I\u2019ve played the last few years. So I\u2019m really happy with myself. I\u2019m just happy that after training the last few months, this is all coming good. The training\u2019s paying off. It\u2019s a huge feeling to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic said he always knew Tomic had the talent to match it with the world\u2019s best.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been saying the last couple of years that he\u2019s right up there with the up and coming players,\u201d Djokovic said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s very talented and he knows the game really well. He plays very well for somebody of his age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cObviously for him, it\u2019s important to be consistent to be successful throughout the whole year. He\u2019s been playing really well in Australia, but he wasn\u2019t managing to maintain that level. It\u2019s up to him to see how he can adjust to the many different surfaces, but he definitely has the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tomic, who has slipped to world No.52 after reaching a career-high ranking of 27 last June, frustrated Djokovic during an entertaining opening set.<\/p>\n<p>Djokovic had to save four break points in his first service game, and even had his plea for a change of balls approved after complaining they were too soft.<\/p>\n<p>But the 25-year-old couldn\u2019t hold off Tomic in the ninth game, with three scintillating winners from the Australian securing the crucial break.<\/p>\n<p>Then in the ninth game of the second set, Djokovic saved five break points before Tomic finally broke the spirit of the five-time Grand Slam winner.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australian Bernard Tomic feels he has taken an important step in his fledgling tennis career after beating world No.1 Novak Djokovic 6-4 6-4 in their Hopman Cup clash at Perth Arena on Wednesday night.
