{"id":3604,"date":"2012-01-04T07:39:42","date_gmt":"2012-01-03T23:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=3604"},"modified":"2012-01-04T07:39:42","modified_gmt":"2012-01-03T23:39:42","slug":"australia-falls-to-french-duo-at-hopman-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2012\/01\/04\/australia-falls-to-french-duo-at-hopman-cup","title":{"rendered":"Australia falls to French duo at Hopman Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s world No.33 Jarmila Gajdosova broke into tears after crashing to a 6-0 6-0 loss to France\u2019s Marion Bartoli at the Hopman Cup in Perth on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>And to add further insult, Australia were kicked out of the race to reach this year\u2019s Hopman Cup final after Lleyton Hewitt lost his singles match against Richard Gasquet, with France going on to win the tie 3-0.<\/p>\n<p>Gajdosova, who started the tournament well on Sunday with a win over Spain\u2019s Anabel Medina Garrigues, looked disinterested against Bartoli in a contest that lasted just 50 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old was broken three times in the opening set, and appeared even more despondent in the second, before world No.9 Bartoli ended the rout with her 12th ace of the match.<\/p>\n<p>Gajdosova wiped away tears as she left the court after the match, with the sellout crowd of 6971 stunned into silence.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDear fans \u2026 I am really sorry for today,\u201d Gajdosova tweeted later in the night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t explain \u2026 what happened today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHope I didn\u2019t disappoint you too much as your support means a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the first double bagel in a singles match at the Hopman Cup since Liz Smylie was thumped by Switzerland\u2019s Manuela Maleeva-Fragniere in 1991.<\/p>\n<p>Ironically, Smylie was commentating the Gajdosova-Bartoli match.<\/p>\n<p>And in a humorous twist as the match approached its end, co-commentator Fred Stolle pondered out loud: \u201cI can\u2019t remember a (previous) double bagel here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smylie remained conspicuously silent after Stolle\u2019s comment.<\/p>\n<p>Bartoli said she felt bad for beating Gajdosova so comprehensively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sorry I beat her that way but I was just focusing on my own game and not looking at the scoreboard,\u201d Bartoli said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s so talented and she\u2019s a lovely lady and when I saw her in tears it was really heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I can\u2019t really miss a shot just for (the sake of) missing the shot.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m sure she has a great future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>World No.19 Gasquet handed France an unassailable 2-0 lead after defeating Hewitt 6-2 5-7 6-1 in a tick under two hours.<\/p>\n<p>Hewitt, playing just his second singles match since returning from a serious foot injury, moved well and took the second set with some scrambling tennis before being overpowered in the decider.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith Lleyton you have to be careful. I know that he\u2019s coming back but it\u2019s still Lleyton, he\u2019s still fighting,\u201d Gasquet said.<\/p>\n<p>France ensured it would be a clean sweep with a 6-3 6-4 win in the mixed doubles.<\/p>\n<p>The winner of Thursday\u2019s tie between Spain and France will advance from group B, while the top-seeded Czech Republic are favourites to qualify from group A.<\/p>\n<p>In Tuesday\u2019s other tie, Spain defeated China 2-1 courtesy of a 6-0 6-2 triumph in the deciding mixed doubles.<\/p>\n<p>French Open champion Li Na defeated Medina Garrigues 6-3 6-1 in the women\u2019s singles, before Fernando Verdasco levelled the tie with a 6-3 6-4 win over Wu Di in the men\u2019s rubber.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s world No.33 Jarmila Gajdosova broke into tears after crashing to a 6-0 6-0 loss to France\u2019s Marion Bartoli at the Hopman Cup in Perth on Tuesday.
