{"id":3535,"date":"2011-12-07T09:10:09","date_gmt":"2011-12-07T01:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=3535"},"modified":"2011-12-07T09:10:09","modified_gmt":"2011-12-07T01:10:09","slug":"australias-future-tennis-stars-on-show-at-optus-australian-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2011\/12\/07\/australias-future-tennis-stars-on-show-at-optus-australian-championships","title":{"rendered":"AUSTRALIA&#8217;S FUTURE TENNIS STARS ON SHOW AT OPTUS AUSTRALIAN CHAMPIONSHIPS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s top junior tennis players will be on show at <strong>December Showdown <\/strong>when the <strong>2011 Optus Australian Championships\u00a0<\/strong>currently being held\u00a0at Melbourne Park.<\/p>\n<p>In the 18s event, players will compete for a wildcard into the qualifying draw of <strong>Australian Open 2012<\/strong> and the main draw of the <strong>Australian Open Play-off<\/strong> starting on 6 December.<\/p>\n<p>In the boys\u2019 draw, 2011 Junior Wimbledon Champion <strong>Luke Saville<\/strong> (Barmera, SA) will lead a high-quality field including <strong>Alexander Bolt<\/strong> (Murray Bridge, SA), <strong>Andrew Whittington<\/strong> (Williamstown, Vic), <strong>Mark Richards<\/strong> (Highfield, Qld), <strong>Andrew Harris<\/strong> (Blackburn, Vic), <strong>Ben Wagland<\/strong> (Gordon, NSW) and <strong>Nicholas Kyrgios<\/strong> (Watson, ACT).<\/p>\n<p>2011 Junior Wimbledon Champion and Queensland Junior Sport Star of the Year <strong>Ashleigh Barty<\/strong> (Springfield, Qld) will be joined by <strong>Azra Hadzic <\/strong>(Keysborough, VIC),<strong> Storm Sanders<\/strong> (Safety Bay, WA), <strong>Rachael Tredoux<\/strong> (Sunnybank, Qld),\u00a0 <strong>Viktorija Rajicic <\/strong>(Delahey, Vic), <strong>Belinda Woolcock<\/strong> (Mt Waverley, VIC) and <strong>Brooke Rischbieth<\/strong> (Berri, SA) in the girls\u2019 competition.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Li Tu<\/strong> (Adelaide, SA), <strong>Bradley Mousley <\/strong>(Wynn Vale, SA),<strong> Isabelle Wallace <\/strong>(East Bentleigh, Vic) and <strong>Eliza Long<\/strong> (Knowsley, Vic) have also qualified for the 18s event today.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tournament Director Francis Soyer <\/strong>is expecting a high level of competition in this year\u2019s tournament, especially when the opportunity to play in a Grand Slam is up for grabs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Optus 18s event gives players in this age group an idea of what is required to become a professional tennis player.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany of the players have competed against one another in junior tournaments and they will now enjoy battling it out for the chance to play in next year\u2019s Australian Open,\u201d said Soyer.<\/p>\n<p>Previous winners of the Optus 18s Australian Championships include emerging players such as <strong>Sean Berman<\/strong> (Vic) and <strong>Isabella Holland<\/strong> (Qld).<\/p>\n<p>For score updates during December Showdown follow <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/oztennisresults\">@oztennisresults<\/a> on Twitter.<\/p>\n<p>For more information about this year\u2019s December Showdown, Optus Junior Tour, Tennis Australia or the players, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tournaments\/december-showdown\/december-showdown-2011\">www.tennis.com.au<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s top junior tennis players will be on show at December Showdown when the 2011 Optus Australian Championships\u00a0currently being held\u00a0at Melbourne Park.
