{"id":3297,"date":"2011-10-19T11:15:56","date_gmt":"2011-10-19T03:15:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=3297"},"modified":"2011-10-19T11:15:56","modified_gmt":"2011-10-19T03:15:56","slug":"national-tennis-league-takes-flight","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2011\/10\/19\/national-tennis-league-takes-flight","title":{"rendered":"NATIONAL TENNIS LEAGUE TAKES FLIGHT"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>National Tennis League (NTL)<\/strong> will debut at the State Tennis Centre on <strong>Wednesday 19 October.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6 Men\u2019s teams and 5 Women\u2019s teams will compete for inter-state glory before the top two teams head to Melbourne to compete against Victoria and South Australia in the inaugural NTL Final at Melbourne Park during the finals week of the Australian Open.<\/p>\n<p>Australia\u2019s current number 2 <strong>Matt Ebden<\/strong> heads the line up, along with former number 8 in the world <strong>Alicia Molik<\/strong>, 2007 Australian Open Junior Champion <strong>Brydan Klein<\/strong> and the likes of <strong>Jessica Moore, Andrew<\/strong> <strong>Roberts<\/strong> and <strong>Miles Armstrong<\/strong> all committing to compete.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to the NTL. At this level, tennis is often an individual sport. So to be given the opportunity to play alongside Western Australian\u2019s for my local club on a national level is really exciting. The quick format is sure to be exciting tennis as every player will be going for every shot.\u201d <strong>Matt Ebden<\/strong> said regarding the NTL.<\/p>\n<p>Alicia Molik and Jessica Moore have both committed to the initiative, with WA tennis starlet Casey Dellacqua also been rumoured to be a wildcard entrant for the league.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe calibre of players committed to this new initiative from Tennis Australia is huge\u201d <strong>Shane Smedley<\/strong>, League Director said.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s really exciting to have a commercial friendly format of tennis that I believe the WA and Australian market will love. The fact the top players will compete in a National League at the Australian Open will be a real opportunity for the players to showcase their ability and be seen. It will be Tennis\u2019 State of Origin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The top two teams will head over to Melbourne Park to compete against each other during the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> week of the Australian Open, playing against the likes of National Superstars <strong>Richard Fromberg, Adam Feeney, Colin Ebelthite<\/strong> and <strong>Olivia Rogowska<\/strong>, who have already signed up for the Victorian League.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0The League allows each team to nominate a different wildcard each week, so you never know which local, state, national or even International star might be lining up.<\/p>\n<p>The tennis is fast and sharp, ensuring spectators are captivated from the first to the very last point.<\/p>\n<p>Play will kick off on <strong>Wednesday 19 October<\/strong> from <strong>7pm \u2013 9pm<\/strong> at the State Tennis Centre.
