{"id":21393,"date":"2025-11-13T08:39:37","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T00:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=21393"},"modified":"2025-11-13T08:39:55","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T00:39:55","slug":"gibson-excited-to-realise-bjk-cup-dream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2025\/11\/13\/gibson-excited-to-realise-bjk-cup-dream","title":{"rendered":"Gibson excited to realise BJK Cup dream"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<p><strong>Talia Gibson will make her Billie Jean King Cup debut in the upcoming Play-offs against Brazil and Portugal, becoming the 59th player to represent Australia in the competition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">A 15-year-old Talia Gibson was in the stands as the Culture Amp Australia Billie Jean King Cup team narrowly lost to France in the 2019 final in Perth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">Gibson witnessed an Australian outfit, which included her idols Ash Barty and Sam Stosur, fall agonisingly short of their first BJK Cup title in 45 years. It was an effort that inspired Gibson&#8217;s ambition to wear the green and gold.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u201cBeing inside the arena, it was completely full. It was super exciting to be there and watch the team do so well,\u201d she told\u00a0<i><em style=\"font-weight: unset\">tennis.com.au<\/em><\/i>. \u201cI think from then on, it\u2019s always been a goal of mine to be on the team.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">Six years on, the West Australian will achieve that goal when she represents Australia at the 2025 Billie Jean King Cup Play-offs against Brazil and Portugal in Hobart on 14-16 November. Gibson becomes the 59th player to play for Australia in the international team format, replacing Priscilla Hon, who withdrew due to injury.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u201cIt was very exciting to get the call-up to be on the team. I\u2019m really looking forward to it,\u201d she said. \u201cI was actually at the airport in Hong Kong [when she received the call from Nicole Pratt].<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u201cIt was an extremely huge shock and a lot of excitement in the moment to then be like \u2018OK, change of plans, I\u2019m now going to be going to Hobart to represent Australia\u2019 [instead of playing an ITF tournament in Brisbane].<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\"><strong style=\"font-style: unset;font-weight: 600\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/fan-zone\/news\/2025\/11\/07\/talia-gibson-australian-billie-jean-king-cup-team\">&gt; READ: Gibson selected for BJK Cup debut<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u201cI just want to really enjoy the experience, enjoy the moments and enjoy being with the girls, and spending a lot of time with the team. But also, getting a feel for what it\u2019s like to represent your country, and hopefully in the future I get to do it many more times.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">Maiden selection for the BJK Cup team caps off a breakout year for the 21-year-old, who achieved a career-high singles ranking of world No.105 in August, and won ITF singles titles in Nantes, France and Granby, Canada. She also progressed through Grand Slam qualifying for the first time at Wimbledon. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">Gibson\u2019s 2025 season helped her gain more exposure to the world\u2019s top players as she developed an understanding of what it took to reach the next level.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u201cI think just learning a lot from playing at the next level pretty consistently,\u201d she said. \u201cBeing able to play a lot more top players this year, I\u2019ve just learned a lot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u201cThat\u2019s been a huge change, but I think just generally in my game, I\u2019ve been able to improve everything to a certain degree, so I think that\u2019s definitely helped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">The BJK Cup Play-offs provide Gibson with the opportunity to learn from some of Australia\u2019s most successful players this season. The remaining quartet \u2013 Maya Joint, Kimberly Birrell, Storm Hunter and Ellen Perez \u2013 all feature inside the WTA top 100 in their preferred format and have collectively picked up five WTA titles in 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 100\">\u201cAll the girls are such amazing players; they\u2019ve all had such a great year,\u201d she said. \u201cMaya and Kim in singles, doing extremely well, I\u2019m able to look up to them in that sense and learn a lot from them, what they\u2019ve been doing really well this year.
