{"id":19196,"date":"2024-01-11T00:29:23","date_gmt":"2024-01-10T16:29:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=19196"},"modified":"2024-01-11T04:10:09","modified_gmt":"2024-01-10T20:10:09","slug":"four-west-aussies-into-2nd-round-of-australian-open-2024-qualifying","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2024\/01\/11\/four-west-aussies-into-2nd-round-of-australian-open-2024-qualifying","title":{"rendered":"Four West Aussies into 2nd Round of Australian Open 2024 Qualifying"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>West Australian&#8217;s Storm Hunter, Talia Gibson, Maddison Inglis and Tristan Schoolkate are all through to the 2nd round of the Australian Open 2024 Qualifying Singles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Storm Hunter<\/strong>\u00a0began her qualifying quest yesterday with a victory over former world No.15 Kaia Kanepi.\u00a0The world No.1 doubles star described the performances from the Aussie women this week at Melbourne Park as \u201cunreal\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of them are younger girls too and it\u2019s their first time playing qualies in a Slam,\u201d Hunter noted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think success kind of breeds success, so to see that and get that belief and motivation is awesome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s super exciting and hopefully we can all keep going.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 29-year-old was relieved after posting her 6-3 6-2 victory against Kanepi, who is ranked four spots higher at world No.175.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I saw the draw, I thought that\u2019s pretty tough,\u201d world No.179 Hunter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKanepi\u2019s an unbelievable player, she\u2019s gone so well at Slams and had an amazing career, so I definitely knew I had to bring my A game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 38-year-old Estonian, a seven-time Grand Slam singles quarterfinalist, made a strong start in their Court 3 meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started off pretty average, 3-0 down pretty quickly,\u201d Hunter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(But) I ended up playing a really good match played on my terms and I was enjoying the crowd out there. It was a lot of fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Maddison Inglis<\/strong> also earned a second-round spot, recording a hard-fought 4-6 6-3 7-5 victory against world No.107 Nuria Parrizas Diaz yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis morning and yesterday I watched a few of the girls and they\u2019re all playing so well,\u201d Inglis said of her Aussie peers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI feel like there\u2019s a lot of belief and we\u2019re all encouraging each other. I\u2019m really happy for the other girls and I\u2019m really happy to be one of the nine through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 25-year-old wildcard needed two hours and 31 minutes to navigate past the in-form Parrizas Diaz, who scooped a WTA 125 title in Canberra last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s always good to get through those really tight ones, especially against a good player,\u201d world No.283 Inglis said after recording her biggest win since August 2022.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels really good to get a win like that \u2026 Hopefully it\u2019s a good starting point for the rest of the tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>West Aussie teen <strong>Talia Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0scored milestone victory yesterday in the Australian Open 2024 women\u2019s qualifying singles competition.<\/p>\n<p>The wildcard entrant upset a higher-ranked opponent at Melbourne Park to record their first wins at Grand Slam level.<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old Gibson triumphed 6-3 1-6 6-2 against Romanian Andreea Mitu, a player 13 years her senior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s my first win at Grand Slam level and second at WTA level, so I\u2019m really proud of today\u2019s effort,\u201d beamed world No.229 Gibson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c(I\u2019ve been dreaming of this) ever since I was little.
