{"id":17871,"date":"2022-08-24T09:11:45","date_gmt":"2022-08-24T01:11:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=17871"},"modified":"2022-08-24T09:20:08","modified_gmt":"2022-08-24T01:20:08","slug":"was-inglis-and-sharma-advance-in-us-open-2022","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2022\/08\/24\/was-inglis-and-sharma-advance-in-us-open-2022","title":{"rendered":"WA&#8217;s Inglis and Sharma Advance in US Open 2022"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Maddison Inglis<\/strong> recovered from a perilous position to progress to the second round of US Open 2022 qualifying.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian trailed Georgia\u2019s Ekaterine Gorgodze 1-3 in the final set, and 2-6 in the subsequent match tiebreak, before fighting back to secure a 7-5 3-6 7-6(8) victory at Flushing Meadows.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow West Aussie <strong>Astra Sharma<\/strong> joins Inglis in the second round of qualifying with her 1-6, 6-1, 7(12)-6(10) victory over French player <span class=\"tsp-dib tsp-lpns tsp-npp\">Jessika <\/span><span class=\"tsp-dib tsp-lpns tsp-npp\">Ponchet, with a tough tiebreak in the final set.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-17872 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2022\/08\/GettyImages-1387341816.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"390\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2022\/08\/GettyImages-1387341816.jpg 7422w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2022\/08\/GettyImages-1387341816-768x503.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2022\/08\/GettyImages-1387341816-1024x670.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Inglis screamed in delight as she clinched match point after almost three hours of play, and was cheered by a large crowd who had gathered around Court 6 in the shadows of Arthur Ashe Stadium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTowards the end, everyone kind of came over and there was huge support when either of us won a point, so it was an awesome atmosphere,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd to have so many kids come up and watch and want autographs, it\u2019s really special.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t feel like it was the prettiest tennis out there. She\u2019s a really tough competitor, lost to her a couple of times in long matches. And I know she\u2019s going to compete every point, so I\u2019m really happy I was able to get through it, just, at the end.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Inglis came through three rounds of qualifying to reach the main draw at Wimbledon two months ago.<\/p>\n<p>After a break, she resumed her season at the recent WTA 125K tournament in Vancouver, where she reached the quarterfinals.<\/p>\n<p>The world No.135 seemed to carry that confidence into Tuesday\u2019s encounter, despite multiple momentum swings testing her resolve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI haven\u2019t played much since Wimbledon, spent a little bit of time at home not very well, so it\u2019s good to be back,\u201d said Inglis, who served for the match at 5-3 in the third set.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHad a couple of good matches and wins in Vancouver, and then to come through a match like that is really important, I think.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA win\u2019s a win, and always good to start a Grand Slam with a win.
