{"id":16925,"date":"2021-11-15T13:44:47","date_gmt":"2021-11-15T05:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=16925"},"modified":"2021-11-16T10:01:22","modified_gmt":"2021-11-16T02:01:22","slug":"vale-clive-wilderspin-oam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2021\/11\/15\/vale-clive-wilderspin-oam","title":{"rendered":"Vale Clive Wilderspin OAM"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"feed-shared-update-v2__description-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"feed-shared-inline-show-more-text feed-shared-update-v2__description feed-shared-inline-show-more-text--minimal-padding feed-shared-inline-show-more-text--expanded \" data-artdeco-is-focused=\"true\">\n<div class=\"feed-shared-text relative feed-shared-update-v2__commentary \" dir=\"ltr\"><span class=\"break-words\"><span class=\"break-words\"><span dir=\"ltr\"><br \/>\nIt is with the greatest of sadness that we advise of the passing of WA Tennis Legend\u2014 Mr Clive Wilderspin, OAM.<\/span><\/span><\/span>Clive Wilderspin was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2021 Australia Day Honours for &#8220;service to tennis&#8221;, following his inaugural induction into the Tennis West Hall of Champions (2019) and 1988 induction into the Western Australian Hall of Champions.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis began for Wilderspin whilst at Wesley College with influence from renowned coach, Herbert Edwards who also played coach to WA\u2019s Arthur Marshall and Bruce Robinson. Wilderspin\u2019s most notable achievements included impressing tennis legend, Harry Hopman after finishing fourth in the Linton Cup aged 16, 9 wins in the state Men\u2019s and Mixed Doubles from 1950 to 1961, finalist achievements in Australian Championships in Double and Men\u2019s Singles events.<\/p>\n<p>Internationally in 1953, he was a runner up in the French Championships with Mervyn Rose in Men\u2019s Doubles, the Dutch National Championships Men\u2019s Doubles winner with Lew Hoad and travelled with the Australian touring team to compete in all four Grand Slam tournaments. Ranked as WA\u2019s No. 1 Men\u2019s Singles player for an impressive thirteen years running (1946 \u2013 1959), Wilderspin took a two-year hiatus before regaining WA\u2019s leading title from 1961 \u2013 1963.<\/p>\n<p>Praised for his longstanding sportsmanship, determination and athleticism, Wilderspin continued to play throughout his senior years, continuing to win competitions and receive notable awards both on and off the court.<\/p>\n<p>Serving as the Tennis West Vice President for a number of years, Wilderspin was recognised as a Life Member of both Tennis West and Tennis Seniors WA. Further recognition of Wilderspin\u2019s legacy is observed with the naming of courts in his honour at Royal Kings Park Tennis Club (2008) and Reabold Tennis Club (2010).<\/p>\n<p>On hearing of Clive Wilderspin\u2019s passing, Tennis West CEO, Brett Patten commented &#8220;We are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of Western Australian Tennis legend, Clive Wilderspin. Tennis has lost a gentlemen and one of its true legends,&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Many of Clive contemporaries believe that, at his best, Clive was one of the greatest Australian players ever to play the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTennis West send condolences to daughter Dale, sons Craig and Dane and extended family.
