{"id":15974,"date":"2020-11-25T21:03:39","date_gmt":"2020-11-25T13:03:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=15974"},"modified":"2021-03-08T11:42:50","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T03:42:50","slug":"alicia-molik-presents-winning-trophy-at-alicia-molik-schools-challenge","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2020\/11\/25\/alicia-molik-presents-winning-trophy-at-alicia-molik-schools-challenge","title":{"rendered":"Alicia Molik presents winning trophy at Alicia Molik Schools Challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Billie Jean King Cup Captain<\/strong>, <strong>Alicia Molik<\/strong>, attended the inaugural <strong>Alicia Molik Schools Challenge <\/strong>at <strong>Robertson Park Tennis Club <\/strong>on <strong>Wednesday 25 November<\/strong>, with the former world number eight presenting winning teams <strong>Applecross Senior High School Team A<\/strong> (Division 1) and N<strong>ewman College Team C<\/strong> (Division 2) with their trophies.<\/p>\n<p>Unique to the history of international tennis in WA, the interschool mixed gender competition boasts a \u2018team tennis\u2019 format similar to that of the former Hopman Cup. A fitting acknowledgement which recognises Molik\u2019s commitment to team tennis, the \u2018Alicia Molik Schools Challenge\u2019 was renamed in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Attuned to the unique offerings, Molik has fond memories of her experiences in team competitions claiming them to be amongst some of her greatest career highlights. Representing Australia in 22 Billie Jean King Cup* ties, seven Hopman Cup events as well as representing Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Molik\u2019s team tennis experience spans more than two decades.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeam competitions were a constant highlight of my career and something that I always looked forward to competing in,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was fortunate to play a great number of team competitions throughout my professional playing career and in my role as the Captain of Australia\u2019s Billie Jean King Cup* team, I\u2019m a huge supporter of this style of competition,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe experience becomes as much about the tennis as it does about the mateship and that\u2019s what makes team competitions so unique for tennis players who spend so much of their time just playing for themselves,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you compete with a team you work together to bring out the best in each other and win or lose that becomes a really powerful experience,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI especially love that the Alicia Molik Schools Challenge will bring male and female players together and I look forward to seeing both the tennis and mate ship on court on Wednesday,\u201d said Molik.<\/p>\n<p>Coordinated by <strong>Tennis West Schools Coordinator Jenna Sparkes<\/strong>, the event saw nineteen teams from nine secondary schools compete for the inaugural title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were really excited to see so many school teams register for the competition and were thrilled to have Alicia Molik join us on the day,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhilst we had some great competition on court, what we enjoyed most was seeing the comradery and mateship that goes hand in hand with these teams based events,\u201d said Sparkes.<\/p>\n<p>Played across two divisions, representative teams of students from years 7-10 competed in a round robin format comprising a girl\u2019s doubles, boy\u2019s doubles and mixed doubles match.
