{"id":15929,"date":"2020-11-20T14:13:06","date_gmt":"2020-11-20T06:13:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=15929"},"modified":"2020-11-25T21:36:50","modified_gmt":"2020-11-25T13:36:50","slug":"wa-sets-record-with-300-kids-competing-in-australias-largest-red-ball-gala-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2020\/11\/20\/wa-sets-record-with-300-kids-competing-in-australias-largest-red-ball-gala-event","title":{"rendered":"WA sets record with 300 kids competing in Australia\u2019s largest Red Ball Gala event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WA played host to <strong>Australia\u2019s largest Red Ball Gala event<\/strong> with 300 students hitting the courts of <strong>Alexander Park Tennis Club<\/strong> on F<strong>riday 13 November<\/strong> for the Catholic Primary Schools Sporting Associations annual competition.<\/p>\n<p>The 300 years 5 and 6 students came together from 13 metropolitan Catholic primary schools for the interschool round robin event, with the match play format aimed at ensuring the delivery of a fun and social team tennis competition.<\/p>\n<p>With students proudly hitting the courts as school representatives, the day encouraged participation for all abilities and focused on skill acquisition and sportsmanship, aimed at establishing the foundations for continued participation and enjoyment.<\/p>\n<p>Working closely with teachers from Tennis Australia partner schools throughout the year, <strong>Tennis West Schools Development Coordinator Jenna Sparkes<\/strong> says the Red Ball Gala events are a wonderful culmination to the schools\u2019 national curriculum aligned tennis programs which run throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Red Ball Gala interschool event is a great way to get kids from a host of different schools all together on court for a mass participation round robin competition,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic opportunity for the kids to put the skills they\u2019ve learnt at school into a match play environment whilst competing against kids of similar ability,\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kids love the opportunity to represent their school and it\u2019s available to all students irrespective of their ability,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Red Ball Gala is a fantastic culmination event for the students who have been doing tennis during school PE lessons,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd to see 300 kids on court putting their new skills into practice whilst also having a great time, is great reward for the work that\u2019s done by everybody throughout the year,\u201d Sparkes said.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding the health and wellbeing benefits afforded by physical activity and in particular those from tennis, local coaches were also involved in the event with the aim of helping to transition players along the tennis pathway from school participation to club level participation in both coaching and competition streams.<\/p>\n<p>Given the 2018 Mayo Clinic report findings* that tennis players live some 9.7 years longer than participants of other sports and activities, the key driver is in helping to transition junior players along the tennis pathway is the overarching goal of long term enjoyment and participation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Representative schools<\/strong><br \/>\nMary MacKillop Community PS<br \/>\nSt Kieran Catholic PS<br \/>\nSt Helena\u2019s Catholic PS<br \/>\nOur Lady of Assumption Catholic PS<br \/>\nGood Shepherd Catholic PS<br \/>\nInfant Jesus School<br \/>\nUrsula Frayne Catholic College<br \/>\nSt. Peter\u2019s Primary School<br \/>\nOur Lady of Grace Primary School<br \/>\nAranmore Catholic Primary School<br \/>\nHoly Cross College<br \/>\nSt Columbus<br \/>\nSt Brigid\u2019s PS<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Tennis Australia Partner Schools Program<\/strong><\/em><br \/>\nTennis Australia\u2019s School Partnership Program aims to encourage more children to pick up a racquet and learn tennis as part of their health and physical education curriculum.
