{"id":15867,"date":"2020-11-04T11:02:12","date_gmt":"2020-11-04T03:02:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=15867"},"modified":"2020-11-25T21:16:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-25T13:16:34","slug":"south-west-zone-claim-back-to-back-darcy-slater-cup-and-women-in-tennis-foundation-cup-team-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2020\/11\/04\/south-west-zone-claim-back-to-back-darcy-slater-cup-and-women-in-tennis-foundation-cup-team-titles","title":{"rendered":"South West Zone claim back-to-back D\u2019Arcy Slater Cup and Women in Tennis Foundation Cup team titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>South West Zone<\/strong> have continued their dominance for a second year running, claiming back-to-back titles in the teams event of the 2020 <strong>D\u2019Arcy Slater Cup<\/strong> (boys) and W<strong>omen in Tennis Foundation Cup<\/strong> (girls) regional competitions held at the <strong>Busselton Tennis Club<\/strong> last week.<\/p>\n<p>In a tightly contested repeat of the 2019 D\u2019Acry Slater Cup Singles Final, Mid West player <strong>Caleb Sewell<\/strong> overcame last year\u2019s winner and South West player Korbin Priestley, to eventually win 7-5, 1-6, 17-15.<\/p>\n<p>The Women in Tennis Foundation Cup Singles Final saw both girls enter the match having not lost a set all week. Eventual winner <strong>Naomi Vakadranu<\/strong> (Peel) needed a second set tie break to claim the match over 2019 winner Holly Cucel (South West), resulting in a 2-6, 6-4, 10-4 win.<\/p>\n<p>More than 80 young players from across the State took part in the prestigious and longstanding regional tournaments, with players from seven different zones, including the Mid West, Upper Great Southern, Lower Great Southern, Great Southern, South West, Central Districts, Pilbara and Eastern Districts, competing in the four day 14\/U junior regional event.<\/p>\n<p>Succeeding the original Goolagong Cup (girls) and Clough Cup (boys), the Women in Tennis Foundation Cup and D\u2019Arcy Slater Cup have retained a stronghold on the regional tournament calendar, owing to the competitive opportunity they bring to the aspiring athletes across regional WA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennis West Competitions and Tournaments Manager, Loretta Hughes<\/strong> says the D\u2019Arcy Slater Cup and Women in Tennis Foundation Cup events provide a much needed opportunity for regional players to compete competitively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe D\u2019Arcy Slater Cup and Women in Tennis Foundation Cup are really important events on the competition calendar,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe events provide really important competitive play opportunities for our regional players and we continue to be impressed by the number of talented regional players who compete for the prestigious titles,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSeeing so many players compete at such a high standard is a wonderful reminder of how important it is to provide these competitive opportunities to the junior athletes in the regional zones,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWA has a host of talented players out in the regions and these tournaments are crucial to the ongoing development of these aspiring athletes,\u201d Hughes said.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting the D\u2019Arcy Slater Cup since 2004, the D\u2019Arcy Slater Foundation continues to do so in recognition of D\u2019Arcy\u2019s great love of tennis. D\u2019Arcy, who tragically drowned in the flooded Helena River in 1991, was an enthusiastic member of the Goomalling Tennis Club and the Guildford Grammar Preparatory School tennis team, as well as Captain of tennis in year 8.
