{"id":14835,"date":"2019-11-27T15:39:37","date_gmt":"2019-11-27T07:39:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=14835"},"modified":"2020-01-13T12:02:09","modified_gmt":"2020-01-13T04:02:09","slug":"powerhouse-wa-squad-to-contest-december-showdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2019\/11\/27\/powerhouse-wa-squad-to-contest-december-showdown","title":{"rendered":"Powerhouse WA squad to contest December Showdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Taking to the courts of <strong>Melbourne Park<\/strong> at the <strong>2019 December Showdown<\/strong> will be 37 of the state\u2019s most promising young tennis players, competing against the country\u2019s top talent at the coveted <strong>Australian Championships<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The action kicks off on Saturday 30 November with the 18\/U event which will see WA\u2019s <strong>Tristan Schoolkate<\/strong>\u00a0compete in his final junior tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A win for the WA hopeful would top off an incredible year, and be a fitting finale for his days as a junior player. Winning last year\u2019s 18\/U Australian Championship Doubles title with partner Dane Sweeny (QLD), the pair will attempt to claim back-to- back titles when they team up again for the 2019 event.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the 18\/U competition, the country\u2019s top ranked 12\/U, 14\/U and 16\/U players will compete across more than 1,500 matches.<br \/>\nWA will no doubt look to repeat last year\u2019s success where the state dominated the 14\/U scene with <strong>Talia Gibson<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Derek Pham<\/strong> winning their respective Singles titles. Pham also went on to claim the Doubles title of the 2018 Australian Championships with partner Edward Winter (SA).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>With a host of WA players ranked within the top ten Australian players for their respective birth years, WA looks well positioned for a successful event with young guns <strong>Tristan Schoolkate<\/strong> (2), <strong>Talia Gibson<\/strong> (1), <strong>Derek Pham<\/strong> (1) <strong>Taylah Preston<\/strong> (1), <strong>Jessie Culley<\/strong> (2), <strong>Rhea Makesar<\/strong> (2), <strong>Zachary Viiala<\/strong> (1) and <strong>Jake Dembo<\/strong> (1) leading the charge for WA.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennis West National Academy Manager, Tom George<\/strong> says December Showdown is an exciting event which sees the country\u2019s very best talent converge on Melbourne Park for more than two weeks of action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDecember Showdown is the pinnacle event of the junior tournament scene in Australia,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to be taking 37 of WA\u2019s top athletes who are privileged by the opportunity to compete for a national title,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur players train and compete incredibly hard all year, and this event brings all of that focus and determination together,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTitles aside, our focus is on encouraging our players to be their very best by living the core values of the Academy &#8211; Compete, Commit and Respect,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe ask that they bring that attitude to every match regardless of the result.
