{"id":14682,"date":"2019-10-15T09:40:23","date_gmt":"2019-10-15T01:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=14682"},"modified":"2019-10-15T09:40:23","modified_gmt":"2019-10-15T01:40:23","slug":"wa-juniors-dominate-at-australian-grasscourt-championships","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2019\/10\/15\/wa-juniors-dominate-at-australian-grasscourt-championships","title":{"rendered":"WA Juniors Dominate at Australian Grasscourt Championships"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WA players have continued to prove their dominance on the national stage, with West Australian young guns <strong>Taylah Preston<\/strong> and <strong>Zach Viiala<\/strong> claiming the 1<strong>4\/U Singles titles<\/strong> at the <strong>Australian Grasscourt Championships<\/strong> hosted by <strong>Cottesloe Tennis Club<\/strong> last week.<\/p>\n<p>Preston played an impeccable tournament as the country\u2019s top ranked Australian female (2005 birth year) and number one seed; dropping just one set in the Final to claim the eventual victory over Queensland\u2019s <strong>Zara Larke 6-1, 2-6, 6-1.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Viiala had an equally impressive tournament as the country\u2019s top ranked Australian male (2005 birth year), claiming the Singles title <strong>6-3, 6-3<\/strong> over fellow West Australian <strong>James Newton<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Furthering WA\u2019s dominance at the National Championships, Preston teamed with compatriot <strong>Jessie Culley<\/strong> to claim the 14\/U Australian Grasscourt Doubles Title; the duos third consecutive title having claimed back to back wins at the South Australian Junior International and Adelaide Junior International events.<\/p>\n<p>Impressively, WA performed well in doubles matches across the championships with Viiala and fellow West Australian <strong>Alexander Despoja<\/strong> finishing as Finalists in the 14\/U boys event, whilst <strong>Jake Dembo<\/strong> and <strong>Gautham Santhosh<\/strong> (QLD) also finished as Finalists in the 12\/U boys draw.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Yuvna G Dass<\/strong> also finished as a Semi-finalist in the girls 12\/U doubles event alongside <strong>Gaby Gregg<\/strong> of NSW.<\/p>\n<p>Other notable West Australian achievements included a Quarterfinals appearance for both <strong>Scott Black<\/strong> and Jake Dembo in the 12\/U Boys Singles draw alongside a Quarterfinals showdown for <strong>Rhea Makesar<\/strong> and Semifinals appearance for <strong>Lily Fairclough<\/strong> in the 14\/U girl\u2019s event.<\/p>\n<p>WA was well represented at the 12\/U and 14\/U Grasscourt Championships with 18 local players stepping on court alongside the top ranked players across the nation from each respective age group.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennis West Manager of Competitions and Tournaments Mrs Loretta Hughes<\/strong> says the tournament was a wonderful week of tennis for everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHosting the Australian Grasscourts Championships at Cottesloe was a fantastic opportunity to witness some of the country\u2019s most promising young players hit the courts right here in WA,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe week certainly didn\u2019t disappoint with high level matches on display throughout the championships,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not often our players have the opportunity to play such prestigious competitions at home, and the results clearly speak for themselves,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClaiming three national titles in the girls 14\/U Singles, boys 14\/U Singles, in addition to the girls 14\/U Doubles titles further cements WA\u2019s position as a powerhouse for some of the country\u2019s most exciting junior talent,\u201d said Hughes.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Grasscourt Championships are one of just three National Championship competitions available to the country\u2019s rising stars.<\/p>\n<p>For a full wrap up of results follow here: <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/2p05CQU\">https:\/\/bit.ly\/2p05CQU<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WA players have continued to prove their dominance on the national stage, with West Australian young guns Taylah Preston and Zach Viiala claiming the 14\/U Singles titles at the Australian Grasscourt Championships hosted by Cottesloe Tennis Club last week.
