{"id":14640,"date":"2019-09-18T15:29:55","date_gmt":"2019-09-18T07:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=14640"},"modified":"2019-11-04T15:20:35","modified_gmt":"2019-11-04T07:20:35","slug":"nadal-medvedev-headed-to-perth-for-atp-cup-2020","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2019\/09\/18\/nadal-medvedev-headed-to-perth-for-atp-cup-2020","title":{"rendered":"Nadal, Medvedev headed to Perth for ATP Cup 2020"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <strong>ATP Cup 2020 Official Draw<\/strong> was conducted under the sails of the iconic Sydney Opera House in New South Wales this week with satellite crosses in Perth and Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p>The draw revealed where the first 19 countries will play in 2020, confirming <strong>Perth<\/strong> will host <strong>Spain, Russia, Italy, Japan, Georgia <\/strong>and the<strong> USA<\/strong> who sit within Groups B and D of the competition.<\/p>\n<p>US Open champion <strong>Rafael Nadal<\/strong> will lead Spain in Group B and Russia\u2019s world No.4 <strong>Daniil Medvedev<\/strong> sits in Group D.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All eyes will be on Perth when Rafael Nadal takes the court at RAC Arena,\u201d <strong>WA Premier Mark McGowan<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The ATP Cup is set to be a stunning success for our State on so many levels.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Western Australians love their tennis, so we expect this new tournament will have huge appeal for locals as well as visitors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In<strong> Brisbane<\/strong>, Serbia\u2019s world No.1 <strong>Novak Djokovic<\/strong> will lead Group A, and Germany, as the sixth ranked team featuring <strong>Alexander Zverev<\/strong>, will lead Group F.<\/p>\n<p>Australia as the host wildcard have also been drawn into Group F.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Queensland Tourism Industry Development Minister Kate Jones<\/strong> said Djokovic would draw thousands of fans to the event.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNovak Djokovic is not only the best male tennis player in the world, but one of the greatest players to ever live. To have him playing in Brisbane will bring thousands of people to Queensland,\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sydney<\/strong> will host Switzerland, led by world No.3 <strong>Roger Federer<\/strong> in Group C, and Austria\u2019s world No.5 <strong>Dominic Thiem<\/strong> in Group E.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NSW Minister for Tourism Stuart Ayres<\/strong> said Sydney will provide the perfect location for both the group stages and finals of the ATP Cup.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am delighted our beautiful Harbour City will play such a key role in this fantastic new initiative, which will attract not only the world\u2019s best tennis players, but visitors from right across the globe,\u201d Ayres said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the upgrades to Ken Rosewall Arena, which include a brand-new canopy roof structure, Sydney is more than ready to showcase both the group and finals stages of this world-class tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn all of the conversations we\u2019ve had with the players, right from the beginning, they have said this is their event. They want to play it. They want to make it work,\u201d <strong>Tennis Australia CEO Craig Tiley<\/strong> said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot at stake. There is more than $US15 million in prizemoney and 750 ranking points \u2013 that\u2019s up there amongst the highest of all of the events in tennis. But also it\u2019s the launch of the season and they want to test out where they\u2019re at. They\u2019re playing for their country and with their mates. That\u2019s what\u2019s going to be such a special experience for the players and the fans.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t really go wrong with the players who have signed up, 10 of the top 10, 27 of the top 30, pretty much all of the top 100 players. I\u2019m pretty sure the match-ups are going to be good.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Managing Director, ATP Cup and Chief Player Officer Ross Hutchins<\/strong> said, \u201cFor us, this is a new major season launch event for men\u2019s tennis.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are going to show great dynamism, we are going to be vibrant, we are going to have all of the best players in the world. The ATP Cup is staged in partnership with Tennis Australia. The ATP Cup will begin the new season and in 2020 will run from 3 to 12 January. The tournament will be played over six days in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney.
