{"id":13750,"date":"2019-01-22T14:17:55","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T06:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=13750"},"modified":"2019-01-22T14:24:16","modified_gmt":"2019-01-22T06:24:16","slug":"women-and-girls-win-with-12-million-investment-in-tennis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2019\/01\/22\/women-and-girls-win-with-12-million-investment-in-tennis","title":{"rendered":"Women and girls win with $12 million investment in tennis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a win for women\u2019s tennis, <strong>Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison<\/strong> has announced a new, four year, <strong>$12 million investment<\/strong> aimed at increasing opportunities for women and girls across the entire spectrum of tennis, from grassroots engagement to sports administration and officiating.<\/p>\n<p>In an effort to retain more girls and young women in tennis, the Federal Government funding will provide increased programs to disadvantaged and hard to reach communities throughout Australia. Opportunities for talent development programs, and the building of female leaders within the sport, will be added gains of the investment.<\/p>\n<p>Noting the likes of the formidable <strong>Ash Barty<\/strong>, and local WA rising star, <strong>Astra Sharma, Minister for Sport Bridget McKenzie<\/strong> says that female role models are a critical element to engaging and motivating female participation in sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know that you can\u2019t be what you can\u2019t see and our current crop of tennis stars are helping to motivate more women get more active, more often, whether it is as player, coach, umpire or volunteer, Minister McKenzie said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the grassroots to the top levels, our government is backing Australian tennis and our female stars of the future,\u201d Minister McKenzie continued.<\/p>\n<p>When children are young, participation numbers are non-discriminative between boys and girls. By age 12, those numbers change significantly, with significant decline in female participation. The $12 million dollar funding boost brings the opportunity to disrupt those figures through increased resources supporting girls and women in continuing their participation and involvement in tennis across all levels of the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis funding will help up provide more young women with tailored development programs while at the same time offer mentoring and additional career pathways in areas such as coaching, sport administration and officiating.\u201d Tennis Australia President &amp; Chair <strong>Jayne Hrdlicka<\/strong> explained.<\/p>\n<p>Building on existing programs offered by <strong>Tennis Australia<\/strong> the funding will:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Provide <strong>3000<\/strong> girls with a tailored talent development program<\/li>\n<li>See <strong>1000<\/strong> girls and women participate in a community leadership and mentoring program<\/li>\n<li>Grow the number of female coach members by <strong>10 percent<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Close the <strong>12 percent<\/strong> gap in grassroots participation<\/li>\n<li>Increase the percentage of girls participating in competition from <strong>37 to 45 percent.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Now is a great time for females of every age and ability to get involved in tennis!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To find your nearest club, visit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/\">www.tennis.com.au\/wa<\/a> and pop your postcode into the \u201cfind a court\u201d feature.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a win for women\u2019s tennis, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has announced a new, four year, $12 million investment aimed at increasing opportunities for women and girls across the entire spectrum of tennis, from grassroots engagement to sports administration and officiating.
