{"id":13145,"date":"2018-07-03T14:05:01","date_gmt":"2018-07-03T06:05:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=13145"},"modified":"2018-07-03T14:46:13","modified_gmt":"2018-07-03T06:46:13","slug":"thirteen-of-was-top-junior-players-take-part-in-darwin-itf-tour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2018\/07\/03\/thirteen-of-was-top-junior-players-take-part-in-darwin-itf-tour","title":{"rendered":"Thirteen of WA&#8217;s top Junior Players take part in Darwin ITF Tour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thirteen of Western Australia&#8217;s top junior tennis players have recently returned from Darwin where they competed in three high level tournaments;<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Skycity Darwin Open (Gold AMT), 2 June &#8211; 6 June 2018<\/li>\n<li>The NT Open Championships (Platinum AMT), 7 June &#8211; 11 June 2018<\/li>\n<li>Darwin Junior International (18\/U ITF) Grade 5, 11 June &#8211; 17 June 2018<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Accompanied by National Academy Manager, Tom George, and Tennis West Coach, Mitch Pleydell, the three high level tournaments took place at the brand new $16.7 million dollar tennis facility at Marrara Sporting Complex.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13150 size-standard-landscape-medium alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/PHOTO-2018-05-31-15-31-45-700x450-360x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/PHOTO-2018-05-31-15-31-45-700x450-360x230.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/PHOTO-2018-05-31-15-31-45-700x450-200x128.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The first tournament was the\u00a0<strong>Skycity Darwin Open (Gold AMT)<\/strong> which saw a number of players win multiple matches. Highlights included\u00a0<strong>Sam de Andrade<\/strong> progressing through to the quarter finals of the Men&#8217;s singles draw, where he lost to number 1 seed\u00a0<strong>Harry Jake Bourchier (TAS)<\/strong>,\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Lexie Weir<\/strong> making the semifinals of the Ladies singles, also going down to the number 1 seed\u00a0<strong>Lisa Mays (NSW)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the second tournament,\u00a0the\u00a0<strong>NT Open Championships<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Lexie Weir<\/strong> continued her good form, partnering with\u00a0<strong>Lisa Mays [2] (NSW)<\/strong> to make the final of the Ladies Doubles, losing 6-2 6-3 to <strong>Amber Marshall [1] (SA) \/ Natasha Russell (SA)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13152 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3453.JPG-700x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3453.JPG-700x450.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3453.JPG-700x450-360x230.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3453.JPG-700x450-200x128.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jerome Iaconi<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>[7]<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Gen Naraya\u00a0<\/strong>also made the doubles quarter finals where they went down 6-2 6-4 to <strong>Harry Jake Bourchier [1] (TAS) \/ Jesse Delaney (NSW)<\/strong>. Congratulations to both Oscar and Reuben Giorgio who played each other in the final of the 16\/U Boys Singles Final with Oscar proving victorious with Reuben unfortunately retiring due to injury.\u00a0The AMT&#8217;s were used as preparation for the main event; the Darwin Junior International Grade 5 ITF.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sam de Andrade<\/strong>, <strong>Ethan Cook<\/strong>, <strong>Shanelle Iaconi<\/strong>, <strong>Lexie Weir<\/strong>, <strong>Tara Gilich<\/strong>, <strong>Nadia Rajan<\/strong> and <strong>Luna Jovanovic<\/strong> all won their singles matches and progressed through the draw. Luna made the doubles semifinal with fellow Australian <strong>Naomi McKenzie<\/strong>, losing to number 1 seeds <strong>Maggie Pearce \/ Natasha Russell<\/strong> 7-5 6-2.<\/p>\n<p>Shanelle and her partner <strong>Jessica Halo<\/strong> played some excellent doubles to make the quarter finals and have a three set match with the top seeds.<\/p>\n<p>Off the court the athletes had a great time experiencing the best of the Northern Territory. The team witnessed one of the many specaticular sunsets at Mindil Beach, followed by the world famous markets where stalls were set up offering international cuisines and activities.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-13156 size-standard-landscape-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3238-700x450.JPG-360x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"360\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3238-700x450.JPG-360x230.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3238-700x450.JPG-200x128.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/07\/IMG_3238-700x450.JPG.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The tour also coincided with the Greek Festival (Glenti) which was held on the Esplanade and had an array of traditional Greek food, dancing and games on offer. The tour concluded with a visit to a National Park where the team swam at Berry Falls and had an opportunity to do some recovery after a tour that included many matches and hours on court training. This will enable the players to gain entry into future ITF&#8217;s held in Australia and around the world*. The tour was also a great opportunity to put all that hard work into practice in tournament play and test the players skills against international competition.<\/p>\n<p>The athletes are now back to training at home in Perth and are looking forward to improving their game and competing in the next set of ITF tournaments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>*The ITF Junior Circuit is the premier level of worldwide competition among under-18 junior tennis players. The ITF Junior Circuits aim is to improve competitive opportunities and help develop players skills. ITF Junior World Ranking points earned by Australians are converted each month and calculated for the players Australian Ranking.
