The Australian team reached the semi-finals, qualifying for the 2018 ITF World Junior Tennis Finals in Prostejov, Czech Republic from August 6-11, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>WA&#8217;s <strong>Derek Pham<\/strong> was selected for the Australian team along with <strong>Alec Braund (QLD)<\/strong> and <strong>Edward Winter (SA)<\/strong>. The team was captained by National Academy Manager, <strong>Tom George<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12928\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/03\/World-Junior-Teams-Airport-700x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/03\/World-Junior-Teams-Airport-700x450.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/03\/World-Junior-Teams-Airport-700x450-360x230.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/03\/World-Junior-Teams-Airport-700x450-200x128.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The team met in Perth for training before departing for Bangkok to get acclimatised and used to the humid conditions. The team had three full days of training at the tennis centre in Nonthaburi, Bangkok, where they focused heavily on doubles training and match play to prepare for the tournament.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12984\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2008.JPG-700x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2008.JPG-700x450.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2008.JPG-700x450-360x230.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2008.JPG-700x450-200x128.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Captains meeting took place with the ITF officials and the draw was released. The Australian&#8217;s were given a difficult one with Korea, Lebanon and Indonesia making up the group of four. All of the boys performed exceptionally well, with wins over all of the teams. The highlight in the group stage was the victory over Korea, as they had an incredibly strong team.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-12985\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2099.JPG-700x450.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2099.JPG-700x450.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2099.JPG-700x450-360x230.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/files\/2018\/04\/IMG_2099.JPG-700x450-200x128.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The team progressed through to the quarterfinals, where the 16 teams was reduced to 8. Australia played Qatar which was a tough match up, as the number 1 Qatar player was undefeated for the week. The tie went to a deciding doubles rubber with Derek and Edward able to secure the win.<\/p>\n<p>The win meant Australia progressed through to the semifinals and guaranteed a place in the finals that will be held in the Czech Republic in August.<\/p>\n<p>China proved too strong in the semifinal and eventually went on to win the tournament.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The boys came up with crucial victories throughout the week, represented Australia to the highest standard on and off the court.&#8221; said Tom George, National Academy Manager.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The boys gave 100%, chased every ball, never gave up and I couldn&#8217;t be more proud of them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The three boys enjoyed their time in Thailand, and loved celebrating their wins by spending time in the local gaming arcade. The team also presented the opposing teams with koala key rings that they would then attach to their tennis bags.
