{"id":11655,"date":"2016-11-22T14:23:09","date_gmt":"2016-11-22T06:23:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=11655"},"modified":"2016-11-22T14:23:09","modified_gmt":"2016-11-22T06:23:09","slug":"five-wa-finalists-named-in-newcombe-medal-australian-tennis-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2016\/11\/22\/five-wa-finalists-named-in-newcombe-medal-australian-tennis-awards","title":{"rendered":"Five WA Finalists named in Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In a coup for WA tennis, five West Australian finalists have been named across the fifteen award categories at the 2016 Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards, to be held in Melbourne on Monday 28 November.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennis Australia CEO<\/strong> <strong>Craig Tiley <\/strong>said the <strong>Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards<\/strong> celebrated all levels of achievement within the tennis community.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlong with honouring our most outstanding professional players, these awards celebrate and recognise the exceptional accomplishments of tennis communities, coaches, clubs and schools around the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last year&#8217;s Australian Open wildcard winner, <strong>Maddison Inglis <\/strong>(WA) is nominated in the <strong>Female<\/strong> <strong>Junior Athlete of the Year <\/strong>category<strong>, <\/strong>which recognises a player 18 years and under who has achieved a commendable ranking in their age group and has demonstrated a record of playing for Australia in teams events.\u00a0 Inglis continues to climb the WTA rankings whilst playing the Pro Tour Events domestically and internationally. She has represented Australia on numerous occasions most recently as the \u2018Orange Girl\u2019 with the Australian Fed Cup Team.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Iglis faces some tough competition in <strong>Kimberley Birrell<\/strong> (QLD), <strong>Jaimee Fourlis<\/strong> (VIC) and <strong>Priscilla Hon <\/strong>(Qld), but is delighted to be nominated for such a prestigious award.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am so excited to be nominated for this award. I have a lot of respect for the other nominees, and after a great year of tennis, I\u2019m really honoured to be standing alongside them as a finalist\u201d Inglis said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Laurie Apps, <\/strong>President of the <strong>Fremantle Lawn Tennis club<\/strong> has been named as a finalist in the <strong>Volunteer Achievement Award <\/strong>category after serving on the management committee of the club as President and Vice-President for over ten years. Laurie has also been the driving force behind the Fremantle Park Redevelopment Project since 2006, and is responsible for the management of the entire tennis facility.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mayor of the City of Fremantle, Dr Brad Pettit endorses the nomination of Mr Apps for this prestigious award.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLaurie has worked tirelessly for the Fremantle Lawn Tennis Club and its members, while at the same time putting his substantial talents to work for the whole community in his role as Convener of the Joint Working Group for the Fremantle Park Redevelopment Project\u201d Dr Pettit said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Matthew Holmes<\/strong>, Head Coach at <strong>Reabold Tennis Club<\/strong> was named as a finalist in the <strong>Coaching Excellence \u2013 Club Award<\/strong> for the high level of junior development at Reabold and the larger community, with a total of 1,486 coaching participants in the last financial year across a variety of programs, including ANZ Tennis Hot Shots, private lessons, Talent ID squads, High Performance programs, FitBit Cardio Tennis, ladies coaching, beginner classes and school holiday clinics.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Wembley Primary School<\/strong> is among 3 schools nominated in the <strong>Most Outstanding School <\/strong>category for their commitment to providing their students with an opportunity to play tennis at school as well as provide links to their local club. Every term the school offers a \u201cBefore-school tennis program\u201d in conjunction with the Floreat Tennis Club. Through the efforts of both parties, the school has had impressive results in attracting students to the sport, with a 400% increase in attendance at this before-school program, with 235 students now attending.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Representing country WA, the <strong>Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Easter Open <\/strong>is a finalist in the <strong>Most Outstanding Australian Ranking Tournament<\/strong> category, which recognises events that have offered a complete package of on- and off-court activities and player amenities to a high standard allowing for a positive tournament atmosphere.<strong>\u00a0 <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Tournament Director<strong> Rick Arthur, <\/strong>is delighted for the tournament to be recognised as one of the best in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis tournament continues to go from strength to strength and is widely regarded as the best amongst the playing group, which is evident with the record numbers that entered the AMT Men\u2019s and Ladies Singles this year.
