{"id":11590,"date":"2016-09-29T09:02:18","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T01:02:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?p=11590"},"modified":"2016-09-29T09:02:18","modified_gmt":"2016-09-29T01:02:18","slug":"zverev-and-petkovic-to-represent-germany-at-hopman-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/news\/2016\/09\/29\/zverev-and-petkovic-to-represent-germany-at-hopman-cup","title":{"rendered":"Zverev and Petkovic to represent Germany at Hopman Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Teenage sensation <strong>Alexander Zverev<\/strong> is returning to Western Australia for the <strong>Hopman Cup<\/strong> at Perth Arena from 1 to 7 January 2017.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 19-year-old won his first professional title on Sunday in explosive fashion, defeating current US Open champion and world No.3 <strong>Stan Wawrinka<\/strong> in St Petersburg, Russia.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Zverev, the youngest player to win a professional title since <strong>Marin Cilic<\/strong> in 2008, started the 2016 season ranked 83 and now currently sits just outside the world\u2019s top 20 at 24.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He will be joined in Perth by former world No.9 <strong>Andrea Petkovic<\/strong>, also making her second Hopman Cup appearance, to represent Germany.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a great event. Having Hopman Cup as the first event of the year for many players is something very good,\u201d Zverev said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In six months, the right-hander has beaten three top ten opponents including <strong>Roger Federer<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is perfect preparation for the Australian Open. You play in similar conditions, you have a great stadium court which is very nice and playing for your country in the first event of the year is something very special,\u201d Zverev continued.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI always love playing for Germany, I always love wearing the German flag on my chest\u2026 It\u2019s something very special playing Hopman Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-nine-year-old Petkovic last visited Perth in 2013 when she partnered <strong>Tommy Haas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The current world No.44 holds six career singles titles and has extensive experience playing for Germany. She made her Fed Cup debut in 2007, has since competed in 13 ties and played in her first Olympic Games in Rio in August.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Hopman Cup Tournament Director <strong>Paul Kilderry<\/strong> can\u2019t wait to have both players in Perth in January.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlexander Zverev is the hottest thing in tennis right now and Andrea Petkovic is one of the most popular players on the tour,\u201d Kilderry said.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cZverev, a rising star, has had an exceptional year climbing up the rankings and has beaten three top ten players including Federer, Berdych and Wawrinka.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGermany will be looking to win their third Hopman Cup title in their fourteenth appearance and are definitely ones to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The 2017 teams announced so far are:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"200\"><strong>Switzerland<\/strong><\/td>\n<td rowspan=\"4\" width=\"400\">Roger Federer and Belinda Bencic<\/p>\n<p>Adam Pavlasek and Petra Kvitova<\/p>\n<p>Jack Sock and Coco Vandeweghe<\/p>\n<p>Alexander Zverev and Andrea Petkovic<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"200\"><strong>Czech Republic<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"200\"><strong>United States<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"200\"><strong>Germany<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Teams from <strong>Australia<\/strong>,<strong> Great Britain<\/strong>,<strong> Spain <\/strong>and<strong> France<\/strong> will also be represented at Hopman Cup 2017.
