{"id":17310,"date":"2022-02-21T12:10:42","date_gmt":"2022-02-21T04:10:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/?page_id=17310"},"modified":"2025-11-25T11:43:08","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T03:43:08","slug":"players-with-an-intellectual-disability","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wa\/players\/inclusion-programs\/players-with-an-intellectual-disability-id\/players-with-an-intellectual-disability","title":{"rendered":"Opportunities for Players with an Intellectual Disability"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Aiming to increase the opportunity for sport and recreation offerings for people to the intellectually disabled and autistic community, Special Olympics, Tennis West, Tennis Australia, and a number of local coaches and clubs, provide tennis options to those with an intellectual disability or autism.<\/p>\n<p>As well as social coaching , tennis also provides a range of tournaments and competitive play opportunities including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>WA Inclusion Development Squad (PWII &amp; Deaf Hard of Hearing combined squad)<\/li>\n<li>PWII National Tournaments and Camps<\/li>\n<li>Australian Tennis Championships<\/li>\n<li>Virtus World Tennis Championships<\/li>\n<li>Global Games<\/li>\n<li>Special Olympics<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you want to understand more about the range of opportunities, activities and programs available please contact Sara Mohamed, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lead <a href=\"mailto:InclusionWA@tennis.com.au\">InclusionWA@tennis.com.au<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/DI-20-002-Disability-Tennis-A5-Promo-Final.pdf\">Click here<\/a> for more information on the Tennis Australia PWII Talent Pathway.<\/p>\n<p><strong>AM I ELIGIBLE?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Below is an outline of the Eligibility Criteria to participate in programs and events:<\/p>\n<table width=\"100%\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"33%\"><strong>Classification<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\"><strong>Eligibility Criteria<\/strong><\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\"><strong>PWII Tennis Tournaments<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"33%\">II-1<br \/>\nIntellectual disability<\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\">\u2013 full-scale IQ score of 75 or lower;<br \/>\n\u2013 significant limitations in adaptive behaviour;<br \/>\n\u2013 onset before age 18<\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\">\u2013 PWII Silver Series<br \/>\n\u2013 PWII State Tournaments<br \/>\n\u2013 Australian Tennis Championships<br \/>\n\u2013 Virtus World Tennis Championships<br \/>\n\u2013 Global Games<br \/>\n\u2013 Special Olympics Events<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"33%\">II-2<br \/>\nSignificant intellectual disability<br \/>\n(this group is currently restricted to athletes with Down syndrome \u2013 excluding Mosaic DS)<\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\">\u2013 a formal diagnosis of Trisomy 21 or Translocation Down syndrome;<br \/>\n\u2013 for safety, athletes must not have symptomatic Atlantoaxial Instability (AAI)<br \/>\n\u2013 athletes with Mosaic Down syndrome may compete in II-1 above<\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\">\u2013 PWII Silver Series<br \/>\n\u2013 PWII State Tournaments<br \/>\n\u2013 Australian Tennis Championships<br \/>\n\u2013 Virtus World Tennis Championships<br \/>\n\u2013 Global Games<br \/>\n\u2013 Special Olympics Events<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td width=\"33%\">II-3<br \/>\nHigh Functioning Autism<\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\">\u2013 a full-scale IQ score of above 75, OR a diagnosis of no intellectual disability, and;<br \/>\n\u2013 a formal diagnosis of Autism or ASD<br \/>\nNote: athletes with Autism who meet the criteria for II-1 Intellectual Disability will be classified in that class<\/td>\n<td width=\"33%\">\u2013 PWII Silver Series<br \/>\n\u2013 PWII State Tournaments<br \/>\n\u2013 Australian Tennis Championships<br \/>\n\u2013 Special Olympics Events<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"3\" width=\"33%\"><strong>Special Olympics<\/strong><br \/>\nWe acknowledge that some athletes with an intellectual disability may not fall into one of the above classifications. For these athletes, there are a number of Special Olympic events they may be eligible to compete in.
