The John Fitzgerald Cup 13\/u boys\u2019 regional championships were held over the weekend at Wodonga Tennis Club, bringing together some of the best country tennis players.<\/p>\n
Four boys from 10 country regions assembled for a carnival of high quality junior tennis. The regions were divided into two pools and played a round-robin format over five rounds, with two doubles rubbers followed by three singles rubbers in a pro set format.<\/p>\n
Following the completion of the round robin, South West remained undefeated in Pool One and Central Gippsland (pictured) undefeated in Pool Two, setting up an intriguing final.<\/p>\n
Central Gippsland continued their impressive form into the final led by Josh Charlton and Jack Clements to win the final over a very competitive South West team led by Jeremy Attrill and Ben Wilde. The final score was four rubbers to one.<\/p>\n
Tennis Victoria\u2019s Competitions Manager Jeff Downes said he was delighted with the success of the championships.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe 2012 John Fitzgerald Cup was an enormous success with the highest quality tennis played across all matches,\u201d said Downes.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe competition is a great way to recognise the best country regional players while also giving them the opportunity to compete against the other top regional kids within a team environment.\u201d<\/p>\n
Leading on from this event, four boys will be selected to represent Victoria at the Nationals to be held in Sydney from 7-11 January.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is an exciting tennis pathway and development opportunity for the four selected players to compete at a national level\u201d said Downes.<\/p>\n
