{"id":6854,"date":"2012-06-10T10:13:33","date_gmt":"2012-06-10T00:13:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/?p=6854"},"modified":"2012-06-10T10:13:33","modified_gmt":"2012-06-10T00:13:33","slug":"harris-and-%ef%bb%bf%ef%bb%bfkyrgios-win-boys-doubles-title-at-roland-garros","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/news\/2012\/06\/10\/harris-and-%ef%bb%bf%ef%bb%bfkyrgios-win-boys-doubles-title-at-roland-garros","title":{"rendered":"Harris and Kyrgios win boys\u2019 doubles title at Roland Garros"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0Andrew Harris (Blackburn, Vic), 18, and Nick Kyrgios (Watson, ACT), 17,\u00a0have won their first junior grand slam title after winning the boys\u2019 doubles event at Roland Garros in Paris overnight.<\/p>\n<p>The unseeded pair pulled out an extraordinary effort to defeat Czech duo and No.7 seeds Adam Pavlasek and Vaclav Safranek 6-4 2-6 [10-7] in just 64 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>Kyrgios, a current AIS Pro Tour Program member and Harris, an AIS visiting scholarship holder, began their tournament strongly with a 6-4 7-5 victory over Spain\u2019s Albert Alcaraz Ivorra and Eduard Esteve Lobato before overcoming No.8 seeds Luke Bambridge (GBR) and Kaichi Uchida (JPN) 5-7 6-4 [10-8] in the second round.<\/p>\n<p>The pair were then tested by Arjun Kadhe (IND) and Jorge Brian Panta Herreros (PER) in the quarterfinals, eventually defeating the duo 6-2 5-7 [11-9] before breezing through to the final after a 6-1 6-3 win over France\u2019s Enzo Couacaud and Alexandre Favrot in the semis.<\/p>\n<p>The boys were rapt with their result and the way they played last night.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt feels really good,\u201d said Harris after the match.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were lucky to get out of our quarterfinal; we were 9-6 down in the super tiebreak so we made the most of that luck and got the win, so we\u2019re very happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kyrgios was just as pleased post match and was looking forward to taking their form to the next junior grand slam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been working pretty hard. We haven\u2019t been playing doubles too long but it\u2019s a very good experience and it would be great if we can carry it on to Wimbledon,\u201d Kyrgios said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think the grass will be perfect for us. We\u2019re great returners, clutch under pressure and the grass helps our serve. We just need to stay tough and we should do well.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mark Edney, Tennis Australia\u2019s AIS and Tours Manager is very proud of the boys and how they performed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a fantastic result for Andrew and Nick,\u201d said Edney.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnytime our athletes have the opportunity to compete on the world stage, like Roland Garros, provides them with a chance to improve and have success under pressure.
