{"id":3826,"date":"2011-06-16T10:36:52","date_gmt":"2011-06-16T00:36:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/?p=3826"},"modified":"2011-06-16T10:36:52","modified_gmt":"2011-06-16T00:36:52","slug":"its-all-in-the-family","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/news\/2011\/06\/16\/its-all-in-the-family","title":{"rendered":"It\u2019s all in the family"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mike and Kate Vaughan\u00a0have a simple tennis goal: to be the best they can be.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst what the future holds for the duo is unknown, if their recent form is anything to go by, there is plenty of potential for the pair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to be the best I can be and maybe one day be a professional,\u201d said Kate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI guess it depends on their journey,\u201d said Maryanne Vaughan, their mother. \u201cThey both aspire to be the best they can be and they\u2019d love to do something really amazing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Both players are members of Tennis Victoria\u2019s State Academy and currently train and play tennis six days a week, whilst also ensuring they keep up with their school work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKate is so focussed,\u201d said Maryanne. \u201cShe wants me to get her up at 6am so she can do her exercises.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe both push the education because you just can\u2019t tell what is going to happen. They study every spare minute they have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Recently, they both won their respective 12\/u singles and doubles at the Barossa Junior Championships in March and the Caulfield Recreation Queens Birthday Optus Junior Tour tournament on the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Currently aged 12 and 11 respectively, Mike is ranked No.5 in Victoria for his birth year and Kate is ranked No.7. They both started playing tennis when they were three years old through the PeeWee program at Frankston Tennis Club and also spent a lot of time playing with their dad, Stephen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe really enjoyed playing tennis with them as it was his time with them and their love for tennis just kind of snowballed from there,\u201d said Maryanne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey did lots of other sports as well, but as time has gone on, tennis has become more of a focus. That\u2019s what they want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennis Victoria\u2019s Player Development Manager, Ashley Naumann, has been impressed with the pair\u2019s development since they joined the State Academy in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMike has made some significant gains with his development over this past year and this has been reflected in his recent successful tournament results,\u201d said Naumann.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve also been very pleased with Kate\u2019s progress over the past year as her game has matured considerably and she\u2019s tracking towards the very top of her birth year in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Mike and Kate Vaughan\u00a0have a simple tennis goal: to be the best they can be.
