Two Victorian towns had the honour of launching the 2022 Summer of tennis at the Bendigo and Traralgon Internationals.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The ATP Challenger tour at the ITF Women\u2019s tour descended on regional Victoria for week of world-class tennis in the lead up to the Australian Open.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hailing from all over the world, players arrived at Bendigo Regional Tennis Centre and Traralgon Tennis\u00a0Association\u00a0for\u00a0seven days of\u00a0intense\u00a0competition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first two days of\u00a0main\u00a0draw competition saw top seeds tumble in Bendigo,\u00a0as underdogs rose victorious across the courts.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All eyes were on former world number\u00a0nine Coco Vandeweghe, whose adoring fans\u00a0eagerly awaited the order of play and\u00a0quickly filled up the\u00a0seats surrounding court four\u00a0each day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Vandeweghe\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0go unchallenged\u00a0in her bid to reach the semi-finals,\u00a0as she was taken to three sets by two of her three opponents.\u00a0But her bid for the championship came undone at the hands of sixteen-year-old\u00a0Andorran Victoria Jimenez\u00a0Kasintseva,\u00a0who defeated Vandeweghe 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 to advance to the final.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But it was Belgian Ysaline Bonaventure who was crowned champion, defeating the young Jimenez\u00a0Katsintseva\u00a06-3, 6-1 in the final women\u2019s clash.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the men\u2019s competition it was the Frenchmen who dominated the first rounds,\u00a0with Enzo\u00a0Couacaud\u00a0flying the flag for his country in the Men\u2019s Singles final against\u00a0American Ernesto Escobedo.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It was a tough battle under the Bendigo sun as an enraptured crowd sat stunned by the impressive standard of play.\u00a0The cheers erupted as\u00a0Escobedo\u00a0hit the winning stroke to claim his\u00a05-7, 6-3, 7-5\u00a0victory.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over in Victoria\u2019s East, a similar narrative was written as top seed\u00a0in the Women\u2019s Singles\u00a0Xiyu Wang from China\u00a0fell early, paving the way for fellow countrywoman and 198\u00a0ranked,\u00a0Yue Yuan to put her stamp on the competition.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Yuan won all her matches in straight sets, as she did the final, defeating Argentina\u2019s Paula\u00a0Ormaechea\u00a0on Court 9 in front of the Traralgon crowd 6-3, 6-2.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the men\u2019s side,\u00a0high profiled French player\u00a0Gilles Simon\u00a0was beaten\u00a0early in the tournament. The French native,\u00a0who has competed in the last 18 Australian Open\u00a0events\u00a0at Melbourne Park,\u00a0fell in the quarter finals to Jesper De Jong from the Netherlands,\u00a06-4, 6-2.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

After a tough match, De Jong\u00a0then\u00a0fell in the\u00a0semi-final\u00a0to\u00a0the\u00a0Czech Republic\u2019s Tomas Machac.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In the bottom half of the draw, Bjorn Fratangelo made the final after a tough three set\u00a0semi final\u00a0win over fellow American Mitchell Krueger.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The pair played\u00a0the\u00a0match\u00a0of the tournament,\u00a0going nearly three hours with three tiebreaks\u00a0involved. Fratangelo eventually\u00a0winning\u00a07-6, 6-7, 7-6 to face Machac in the final.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Machac, who had far less time on court than his opponent\u00a0accounted for Fratangelo in the final, eventually winning\u00a0in straight sets 7-6, 6-3.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
