Ethel Elkington from the Sunnyside Tennis Club has been presented with a Tennis Service Award at her tennis club on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
A Tennis Service Award, which is part of Tennis Victoria\u2019s Recognition Program, is presented to an individual who has demonstrated a contribution to the sport through devoted and significant service.<\/p>\n
Ethel\u2019s service to her tennis club spans over five decades and is simply an amazing achievement. She was very pleased to receive the awarded and couldn\u2019t wipe the smile off her face.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt makes me feel very humbled, I feel as though I need a good strong brandy,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut it\u2019s a wonderful tribute. We don\u2019t have these positions to get awards, you do it for the love of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
The year was 1950 when a then 15-year-old Ethel wandered into the Sunnyside Tennis Club and since then it has been like a second home to her.<\/p>\n
Described as a \u201cstalwart\u201d of the club, Ethel\u2019s 45 years of service and countless hours around the club culminated into life membership and a thriving ladies competition \u2013 which she still attends.<\/p>\n
From sweeping the clubrooms to organising the banking Ethel epitomises club spirit and is always willing to go the extra mile for the benefit of the club and its members.<\/p>\n
