{"id":14871,"date":"2016-01-12T16:43:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-12T05:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/?p=14871"},"modified":"2016-01-12T16:43:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-12T05:43:38","slug":"barwon-win-eighth-consecutive-inter-regional-country-championship","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/news\/2016\/01\/12\/barwon-win-eighth-consecutive-inter-regional-country-championship","title":{"rendered":"Barwon win eighth consecutive Inter-regional Country Championship"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The team from the coastal region of <strong>Barwon<\/strong> have taken out an incredible eighth consecutive Tennis Victoria Inter-regional Country Championship title.<\/p>\n<p>Swan Hill Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club hosted the event\u2019s 60<sup>th<\/sup> edition, with Barwon coming out on top once again \u2013 this time against eight other country regions including Loddon, Gippsland, Mornington, Goulburn and Wimmera.<\/p>\n<p>Barwon (257 pts) won 13 titles and claimed 10 runner up placings across the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events, finishing on top of the aggregate points tally by a convincing 49 points.<\/p>\n<p>Goulburn were runners up on 208 points while host team Northern Mallee finished third on 172 points and were also rewarded with the Cooke Shield for Most Improved Region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy winning the Inter-regional Country Championships for the 8<sup>th<\/sup> consecutive occasion, Barwon Region have put themselves in the history books. No country tennis region has achieved this feat,\u201d said Executive Manager &#8211; Tennis Operations Nick Hinneberg.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom their junior players to Open and Senior ranks, they are certainly a formidable team and once again, deserve their team win. We congratulate them on their success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Geelong\u2019s <strong>Matt Hicks<\/strong> successfully defended his Open singles title, downing East Gippsland\u2019s Aidan Fitzgerald 1-6 6-2 6-2, before pairing with <strong>Adam Lasky<\/strong> to take home a second doubles title over Goulburn\u2019s Jarrod Bingham\/ Luke Dixon (6-3 6-2).<\/p>\n<p>In the women\u2019s Open event, Bendigo\u2019s <strong>Eliza Long<\/strong> dominated taking home three country championship titles.<\/p>\n<p>Long defeated 16-year-old Olivia Ryan 6-4 6-1 to claim the singles crown, and paired with <strong>Jess Hartland<\/strong> to win the doubles event over Ryan and Nicole Mullen (6-4 6-2).<\/p>\n<p>Long then backed up for a third victory alongside <strong>Isaac Watson<\/strong> in the mixed doubles.
