{"id":14558,"date":"2015-11-11T13:23:30","date_gmt":"2015-11-11T02:23:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/?p=14558"},"modified":"2015-11-11T13:23:30","modified_gmt":"2015-11-11T02:23:30","slug":"congratulations-to-all-victorian-newcombe-medal-nominees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/vic\/news\/2015\/11\/11\/congratulations-to-all-victorian-newcombe-medal-nominees","title":{"rendered":"Congratulations to all Victorian Newcombe Medal nominees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Six of Australia\u2019s top tennis players \u2013 2015 Australian and US Open winner <strong>Dylan Alcott<\/strong>, breakthrough talent <strong>Sam Groth<\/strong>, rising star <strong>Thanasi Kokkinakis<\/strong>, evergreen champion <strong>Sam Stosur<\/strong> and doubles stars <strong>Casey Dellacqua<\/strong> and <strong>John Peers <\/strong>\u2013 have been named finalists for this year\u2019s <strong>Newcombe Medal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The highest honour in Australian tennis will be presented to the most outstanding elite tennis player and ambassador for the sport at a special awards ceremony to be held in Melbourne on Monday 23 November.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tennis Australia CEO<\/strong> <strong>Craig Tiley <\/strong>said the <strong>Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards<\/strong> celebrated all levels of achievement within the tennis community.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is not just about honouring Australia\u2019s most outstanding tennis player, the awards are about recognising and celebrating the exceptional accomplishments and contributions of tennis communities, coaches, clubs and schools around the country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The 2015 finalists were honoured to learn of their nomination for the sport\u2019s top gong.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s unbelievable. I think I\u2019m the first athlete with a disability to ever be nominated for the Newks, which is absolutely incredible,&#8221; said two-time Grand Slam Champion\u00a0Alcott. \u00a0&#8220;To be recognised purely as an elite athlete and to be among the other nominees and those who have won in the past, it\u2019s humbling. I can\u2019t believe it, it\u2019s awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dellacqua said: \u201cI\u2019m excited to be nominated for the Newcombe Medal again. There have been some great results by all Australian players this year, and it\u2019s an honour to be nominated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Groth said: \u201cTo be nominated for the Newcombe Medal really caps off what I feel was a real breakthrough year for me. I was really happy with the way 2015 went and although I stopped my season a little early due to injury, being nominated is a great way to close my best season yet. It was a great year for a lot of Aussie players so for now I&#8217;ll keep my fingers crossed and look forward to November 23.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kokkinakis said: \u201cI\u2019m pretty excited, It\u2019s obviously an honour to be nominated for the big medal. I won the junior medal last year so it\u2019s obviously a good transition I\u2019ve made. I\u2019m in good company so it should be a great night.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peers said: &#8220;It\u2019s a great honour to be nominated for the Newcombe Medal. It has been a great year for me and to get nominated for this award is a privilege.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Stosur said: \u201cIt\u2019s nice to be nominated again. Obviously I\u2019ve been nominated five times now and have won it a couple of times.
