Almost 100 players from around the state ventured south for the Cygnet Open<\/strong>, held across three days in February as per tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Held at the picturesque Cygnet Tennis Club<\/strong>, which celebrated its 100th<\/sup> year in late 2020, the event saw some familiar faces take home titles in front of a healthy local crowd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tasmanian No.2 Edward Bourchier<\/strong> claimed his second consecutive AMT Men\u2019s Singles crown, defeating Launceston\u2019s Sam Whitehead<\/strong> in straight sets, while Alyssa Hibberd <\/strong>overcame a resilient Alicia Dale<\/strong> in the AMT Women\u2019s Singles final to claim her sixth Cygnet win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dale played beyond her age, with the 13 year old pushing\nHibberd all the way before succumbing to a 4-6, 6-7 defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Bourchier and Hibberd backed up their singles wins with doubles victories alongside Andrew Bourke<\/strong> and Janaya Smith<\/strong> respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been coming down here since I was nine or 10,\u201d Hibberd\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI thoroughly look forward to Cygnet every year and the\nplayers generally have a really fantastic time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Locals Cam Ashlin<\/strong> and Nyal Verdivenci<\/strong> battled it out in the Country Men\u2019s Singles final, with Club president Merdivenci walking away with the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tournament Director Brad Cleary paid tribute to the competitors, committee and community for their efforts during the tournament.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
