{"id":9761,"date":"2020-12-22T11:21:02","date_gmt":"2020-12-22T00:21:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/?p=9761"},"modified":"2020-12-22T11:37:10","modified_gmt":"2020-12-22T00:37:10","slug":"elmer-lee-the-standouts-as-junior-utr-champs-completed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2020\/12\/22\/elmer-lee-the-standouts-as-junior-utr-champs-completed","title":{"rendered":"Elmer, Lee standouts as Junior UTR Champs completed"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The final long weekend of the inaugural <strong>Junior Universal Tennis Rankings (UTR) State Performance Championships<\/strong> saw champions from the 14\/u and 18\/u age groups crowned at the <strong>Domain Tennis Centre<\/strong> on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event replaced the annual <strong>December Showdown<\/strong> this year due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and state border restrictions, and is part of a new series of events taking place across seven Australian states and territories this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launceston\u2019s <strong>Jake Elmer<\/strong> and Hobart\u2019s <strong>Edison Lee<\/strong> were the standout competitors in their respective divisions, with Hobart duo <strong>Casey Ambler <\/strong>and <strong>Jack Akl<\/strong> also performing strongly across three days of play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"705\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2020-12-22T110925.945-1024x705.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2020-12-22T110925.945.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2020-12-22T110925.945-768x529.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Jake Elmer performed strongly in the 18\/u events.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Elmer carried his strong <strong>North West Tennis League<\/strong> form into the inaugural Championships, defeating Ambler in straight sets in the 18\/u singles final on Sunday, before the duo paired up to defeat <strong>Andreas Tsiakis <\/strong>and <strong>Thomas Hann<\/strong> in the 18\/u doubles final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2020\/12\/15\/hadley-dale-among-winners-on-opening-weekend-of-junior-utr-champs\">who finished runner-up in both the 16\/u singles and doubles events on the opening weekend of the Championships<\/a>, bounced back to claim the 14\/u singles title in a tie-breaker on Centre Court after conceding the opening set to Akl.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Hobart-based junior then teamed up with Akl to claim the 14\/u doubles title over Alex Martin and Lucas Akl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"639\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2020-12-22T111503.960-1024x639.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9769\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2020-12-22T111503.960.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-2020-12-22T111503.960-768x479.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Edison Lee in action during the 14\/u boys singles final.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tournament Director Matthew Scott <\/strong>was pleased with how the inaugural event went, with a high standard of play and sportsmanship displayed across the six days of competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo wrap up\nthe year with a top-tier junior event has been fantastic,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe\natmosphere was great across both long weekends, and we\u2019re looking forward to\nseeing the event grow in the future, with the plan to hold it in a different\nregion of the state every December.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt provides a great opportunity for the community to support local tennis and to get around this event, which we see as being quite a prestigious one for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Junior UTR State Performance Championships 14\/u &amp;
