Teams from three clubs have taken out North West Tennis League<\/strong> titles for 2020, headlined by the Burnie Eagles<\/strong>\u2019 hard-fought A-Grade<\/strong> victory over Devonport City<\/strong> at Burnie Tennis Club<\/strong> on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Burnie side (pictured above) claimed the first two rubbers, with Ben Cawston<\/strong> avenging a regular season singles loss to Devonport\u2019s Sam Whitehead<\/strong> to open the Eagles\u2019 account, followed by a doubles win to Shaun Summers<\/strong> and Connor Parke<\/strong> over City duo Jake Elmer<\/strong> and Jake Gleeson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Things took\na turn when Whitehead and Whitehead teamed up to hand Cawston and Summers their\nfirst doubles defeat of the season, and when Elmer won the first set of his\nsingles match against Parkes the momentum had well and truly shifted in\nDevonport\u2019s favour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parkes\nrallied however, digging deep to take the second set before seizing the super\ntie-breaker 10-4, along with the title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A-Reserve<\/strong> final saw two Devonport Tennis Club<\/strong> sides meet, with the Eugene Street Elks<\/strong> claiming victory over the Back Street Bandits<\/strong> by a single set, with David Robinson<\/strong> a standout for the victors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wynyard\/Somerset<\/strong> overcame a resilient Latrobe Demons<\/strong> outfit in the B-Grade <\/strong>final, taking out two super tie-breakers and emerging victorious, despite the efforts of division player of the year Jamie Fawkner<\/strong>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summers was\npleased with the level of support the finals day received from the North West\ncommunity, with all three deciders held at the Burnie Tennis Club.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAll of the\nmatches were super close and it was pretty loud throughout the day; there was a\nlot of barracking,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe stands were half-full on Saturday, which you never see unless there an international event on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflecting\non the season, Summers sang the praises of the players, singling out the younger\ncompetitors for embracing the competition in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe improvement\nin the league over the last four seasons has been out of sight,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSam\nWhitehead is to be credited with bringing Launceston-based players into the\nleague.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe\u2019s\nplayed every season and as it\u2019s grown, he\u2019s brought more players with him.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOliver Hadley<\/strong> and Jake Elmer are two of the best under 18 players in the state, and when you add that to the returning US college players we\u2019ve had involved, it\u2019s an impressive standard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Players from the region are hopeful of an announcement of a Tri-Series event involving teams from the North and South of the state in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
