{"id":9703,"date":"2020-12-16T13:36:32","date_gmt":"2020-12-16T02:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/?p=9703"},"modified":"2020-12-16T13:38:16","modified_gmt":"2020-12-16T02:38:16","slug":"devonport-hosts-successful-first-ever-females-in-tennis-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2020\/12\/16\/devonport-hosts-successful-first-ever-females-in-tennis-camp","title":{"rendered":"First-ever Females in Tennis Development Camp a success"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>A group of Tasmanian junior players aged 9-14 years braved rainy conditions to engage in a full day of on and off-court experiences during the first <strong>Females in Tennis Development Camp<\/strong> at <strong>Devonport Tennis Club<\/strong> in early December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The camp was\none of 25 specialist female development days being held across Australia, with\nthe aim of amplifying opportunities for girls and women in tennis, as well as identifying\nplayers for state and national development pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Designed\nspecifically for girls and reflective of what is being seen in the modern\nwomen\u2019s game, the camps focus on skill development, peer connection and unique\nexperiences within tennis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Underpinning the program\u2019s overall philosophy is <strong>Tennis Australia\u2019s Wellbeing Program<\/strong>, with activities designed for nurturing the development of emotionally healthy players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-123-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9711\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-123.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-123-768x512.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><br>Females in Tennis National Lead Emma Shoemaker, National Development Squad Coach Raphael Durek and Schools Coordinator Alyssa Hibberd at Devonport Tennis Club. <br>Pic: The Advocate Newspaper<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>National Development Squad Coach Raphael Durek <\/strong>was pleased with the turn out and commitment displayed from the inaugural intake of local female juniors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was\ngreat to see a strong number of girls, sixteen in all, attend the state\u2019s\nfirst-ever Females in Tennis Camp in Devonport,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cThey all did amazingly, especially given the\ntough weather conditions we were dealing with on the day,\u201d he said.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe girls got stuck in and really bought into the themes of the day, with a key focus being the drive-volley, which is at the forefront of the women\u2019s game.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tennis Tasmania\u2019s Schools Development Coordinator Alyssa Hibberd <\/strong>said the camp\u2019s holistic approach saw participants form a bond that she hopes will continue to strengthen as they interact with each other throughout their respective tennis journeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA great\nelement of the camp was to see the girls connect through first highlighting\ntheir own character strengths and then sharing this with their peers,\u201d she\nsaid.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs females\nwe are often quick to tell others our weaknesses.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0We want to focus on the positives, and encourage the girls to be proud of what makes them special people.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"660\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-122-1-1024x660.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9712\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-122-1.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-122-1-768x495.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-122-1-700x450.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-122-1-200x128.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Camp participants enjoy a rare break in the rain at Devonport Tennis Club.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Devonport camp, also led by <strong>Females in<\/strong> <strong>Tennis National Lead<\/strong> <strong>Emma Shoemaker <\/strong>and <strong>Tennis Tasmania&#8217;s North and North West Regional Lead Phoebe Davis, <\/strong>is the first of two initial experiences planned in the state, with a third camp planned \u00a0for experienced players early next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was\ngood to start in the North, and we\u2019re looking forward to running the same thing\nin the South in January, before bringing it all together with an advanced statewide\ncamp sometime in March,\u201d Durek said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe really\nwant to get more girls involved in tennis in the state, and these camps are a fantastic\nplatform to build from;
