Dale star on first weekend of Junior UTR Champs"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>The opening\nlong weekend of the inaugural <strong>Junior Universal\nTennis Rankings (UTR) State Performance Championships<\/strong> saw champions from\nthe 12\/u and 16\/u age groups crowned at the <strong>Domain Tennis Centre<\/strong> on Sunday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.myutr.com\/statechampseries-au\">The event<\/a> replaces the annual <strong>December Showdown<\/strong> this year due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19 and state border restrictions, and is part of a new series of events taking place across seven Australian states and territories this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Launceston\u2019s <strong>Oliver Hadley<\/strong> and Hobart\u2019s <strong>Alicia Dale<\/strong> were the standout competitors in the 16\/u division, with the duo claiming the boys and girls singles titles respectively.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hadley (pictured above) then paired up with Hobart\u2019s <strong>Ben Fergusson <\/strong>to take out the doubles crown, with Dale following suit in the girls doubles alongside singles runner-up <strong>Brooke Miller<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 12\/u division saw Launceston\u2019s <strong>Oliver Carswell<\/strong> and Hobart\u2019s <strong>Olivia Wilkinson<\/strong> also triumph in their singles and doubles events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"653\" declared the weekend a success and praised the standard and sportsmanship displayed across the three days of competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s been a big year and it\u2019s been amazing to\nbe able to finish 2020 with our top-tier junior event,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere has\nbeen some quality tennis across the two divisions so far, and we\u2019re looking\nforward to finishing strongly with the 14\/u and 18\/u age groups this coming\nweekend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Universal\nTennis Rating (UTR) is a purely results-based global rating system which rates\nall players on the same 16-point scale regardless of age, gender or location. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first UTR event was held in Tasmania in July as an alternative to Australian Ranking Tournaments, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2020\/11\/26\/australian-ranking-tournaments-to-return-in-2021\">which will return from 1 January 2021<\/a> after being suspended due to COVID-19 restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"701\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2020\/12\/Webp.net-resizeimage-120-1024x701.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9696\" has reacted positively by jumping on\nboard, creating their profiles and competing,\u201d Scott said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of the clubs in the state have engaged with this platform to run their events, which provides opportunities for players to build their rankings and encourages level-based play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2020\/11\/04\/tasmanian-utr-junior-state-championships-announced\">14\/u and 18\/u divisions to be held from Friday 18 \u2013 Sunday 20 December at the Domain Tennis Centre to conclude the Championships<\/a>, Scott said he was looking forward to seeing the event grow statewide in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is\nthe inaugural event in Tasmania, with similar ones being held all over\nAustralia,\u201d he said.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe plan to\nrun this annually in December, with the plan for a different region of the\nstate to host each year.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt provides a great opportunity for the community to support local tennis and to get around this event, which we see as being quite a prestigious one for
