Burnie Tennis Club<\/strong> is set to light up on Saturday afternoon when it plays host to a trio of North West Tennis League<\/strong> finals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A-Grade<\/strong> final will see two dominant forces meet in the Burnie Eagles <\/strong>and Devonport City<\/strong>, with both sides boasting top-end talent.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Highlighting the contest will be the rivalry between US college athlete Ben Cawston <\/strong>(pictured above) and Sam Whitehead<\/strong>, who himself heads to Texas next August to commence a college scholarship<\/a>.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cawston will be supported by state soccer representative Connor Parke<\/strong> and respected veteran Shaun Summers<\/strong>, who should be evenly matched against Devonport young gun Jake Elmer<\/strong> and Jake Gleeson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The A-Reserve<\/strong> final will see two Devonport Tennis Club sides face off, with the Gray Hiller-led Back Beach Bandits<\/strong> set to face off against the Eugene St Elks<\/strong>, while the B Grade<\/strong> final will be contested by the Latrobe Demons <\/strong>and Wynard-Somerset<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summers\nhailed the commitment from players and clubs from the region on Friday ahead of\nthe weekend deciders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis has been a really successful season, with a bunch of college players like Benny Cawston and Elliot Johnstone<\/strong> leading the way,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYoung guys like Jake Elmer and Oliver Hadley<\/strong> from Launceston have also strengthened the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTo see two\nsmaller clubs like Latrobe and Wynyard-Somerset in the B Grade final is\nencouraging; they\u2019ve both performed well this season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cawston, who\nhas recently returned from the United States and featured heavily in local competition\nin the back half of 2020, echoed Summers\u2019 sentiment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s been\na great season up until this point,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere have\nbeen a lot of solid teams show up across all divisions, and in the A-Grade\nfinal, there\u2019s nothing to separate the two sides.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt will come down to which team wants it more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whitehead,\nwho heads off to the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley next year, agrees\nwith Cawston\u2019s take on the match up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe final\nshould be a tight contest and we\u2019ll be looking to draw inspiration from Gray\nHiller, who is one of the greats of tennis in the North West.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The final caps off a busy month for players from the region, following the recent Tennis North vs North West Tennis League Challenge Day<\/a> in Launceston.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite suggestions of taking it easy in January, Summers believes players are keen build on the momentum of December\u2019s action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Challenge Day and this season have reinvigorated everyone to keep playing and getting better; and we\u2019re hopeful of a Tri-Series event including teams from the North and South of coming together in a month or so,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
