{"id":8630,"date":"2019-03-07T17:13:05","date_gmt":"2019-03-07T06:13:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/?p=8630"},"modified":"2019-03-07T17:13:05","modified_gmt":"2019-03-07T06:13:05","slug":"larn-mcshane-from-tassie-to-switzerland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2019\/03\/07\/larn-mcshane-from-tassie-to-switzerland","title":{"rendered":"Larn McShane: From Tassie to Switzerland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Tennis has taken proud Tasmanian Larn McShane all over the world \u2013 yet she never forgets where she first fell in love with the sport.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was 10 and walked past an after-school tennis course and asked mum what they were doing,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA few weeks later I was able to join this after-school program and absolutely loved it. I then started training with my dad as often as he had time and it went from there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McShane, 28, is now a tennis coach at\u00a0Tennisschule Aarau-West, one of Switzerland\u2019s largest tennis academies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt wasn\u2019t only the chocolate and Roger (Federer) that attracted me to move to Switzerland,\u201d she says with a smile.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir tennis system here is extremely organised and for such a small country, they have a lot of tennis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.larnmcshane.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">VISIT: Larn McShane&#8217;s health fitness website<\/a><\/p>\n<p>McShane is qualified to judge, having now played and coached across many different countries.<\/p>\n<p>After completing high school in Tasmania, McShane went to a US college to pursue her tennis dream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I went to college in LA it was my first time out of Australia,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTravelling around the States playing tournaments and matches is definitely something I would recommend to every player who might be thinking about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/play\/become-a-pro\/us-colleges\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LEARN MORE: US College pathway\u00a0<\/a><\/p>\n<p>After completing college, McShane relocated to Europe. She spent time competing on the pro circuit, as well as playing team tennis in Germany, France and Switzerland \u2013 which she describes as \u201can awesome experience\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She also discovered a passion for coaching.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI originally took the coaching courses to learn how to better my own tennis. It definitely made me see the game differently and took a lot of the frustration out of the unknown errors and injuries,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis changed the way I trained, which is also now the way I approach my coaching.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her experiences have since been enriched through time living and coaching in Germany, Poland and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe cool thing about tennis is that it&#8217;s a worldwide sport, which really means the opportunities are pretty endless,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to travel has been a highlight and meeting so many awesome, and sometimes also not so awesome, people has taught me a lot.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8633 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2019\/02\/20180716_093137-72x72.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2019\/02\/20180716_093137-72x72.jpg 72w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2019\/02\/20180716_093137-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2019\/02\/20180716_093137-260x260.jpg 260w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2019\/02\/20180716_093137-350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2019\/02\/20180716_093137-175x175.jpg 175w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2019\/02\/20180716_093137.jpg 1086w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>McShane still keeps a close eye on Tasmanian tennis, offering to assist juniors when she returns home to visit family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo matter where we live in the world, I will always still be Tasmanian,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want to stay in touch with junior tennis in Tassie because yes Tassie is small, but that doesn&#8217;t make our chances of taking our tennis to great places any less.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have a lot of amazing resources in Tasmania, the coaches and their experiences as well as the Hobart International and the ITF and Pro Tour events up north.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/players\/kids\">DISCOVER: Junior tennis in Tasmania<\/a><\/p>\n<p>McShane hopes sharing her own experiences can inspire Tasmanian juniors to pursue their own tennis dreams too.<\/p>\n<p>She likes to tell them one of her most challenging \u2013 yet life-changing \u2013 experiences of training at a French academy during a cold winter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was as basic as it gets. No toilet seats in bathrooms, no heating, no extras anywhere, but it was fantastic,\u201d she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe people there were so motivated and made the best out of every opportunity they got. I loved this because whenever I come home and coach, I hear people often comparing everything as a means for not being able to excel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll you need for success is the will to succeed and as a tennis player, to know how to develop your own personality into your own game.
