{"id":2733,"date":"2012-07-16T14:39:41","date_gmt":"2012-07-16T04:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/?p=2733"},"modified":"2012-07-16T14:39:41","modified_gmt":"2012-07-16T04:39:41","slug":"fitzgerald-visits-tassie-hot-shots","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2012\/07\/16\/fitzgerald-visits-tassie-hot-shots","title":{"rendered":"Fitzgerald visits Tassie Hot Shots"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2012\/07\/Fitzy-460x306.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2736 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2012\/07\/Fitzy-460x306-410x272.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"410\" height=\"272\" \/><\/a>Australian tennis legend John Fitzgerald was in the Apple Isle last week to visit a handful of schools involved in the pilot of the MLC Tennis Hot Shots National School Partnership Program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">The program aims to build partnerships between schools, coaches and clubs to get more kids playing tennis more often and over the last twelve months has been trialled at 22 schools around Australia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Fitzgerald paid a visit to two schools, Our Lady of Lourdes in Devonport and Riverside Primary School in Launceston who are the Tasmanian participants of the program. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic opportunity to have John visit the school,\u201d Clynton Scharvi, Principal of Our Lady of Lourdes said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cThe kids have been very receptive to the program, with the students eager to get out there and play.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cOur local CTO Sally Jackson has been a great resource and has put us in touch with the Devonport Tennis Club and other key contacts to help embed Hot Shots as part of our sports curriculum.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Schools like these are perfect examples to show how the program is really catching on Fitzgerald says and believes it\u2019s on track to build a substantial base of players in Australia. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cWe\u2019ve had 275,000 kids from around the country have a Hot Shot\u2019s experience over the last year. And we are already seeing kids running straight to the gym during recess and lunch to get first dibs on the equipment,\u201d Fitzgerald said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cTo compete internationally is not an easy thing, we need more numbers to come in at the base level and this program will start to feed this process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">Fitzgerald also noted the program\u2019s soft ball concept has helped get more kids on court and try the sport.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cKids want instant gratification really these days so rather than having a fully pressurised ball that\u2019s very difficult for a young person to control, we\u2019ve introduced this larger in diameter ball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cIt\u2019s softer and gives them a chance to play and leaves them with a smile on their face the first time they pick up a racquet.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">\u201cThey now have control or some form of control with the ball. They contact a lot easier and it just gives them heart to want to play again,\u201d Fitzgerald added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">During his trip to Tasmania, Fitzgerald also introduced the kids\u2019 starter program to St Michael\u2019s Collegiate School in Hobart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\">The MLC Tennis Hot Shots National School Partnership Program will be officially launched in October. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australian tennis legend John Fitzgerald was in the Apple Isle last week to visit a handful of schools involved in the pilot of the MLC Tennis Hot Shots National School Partnership Program.
