{"id":11883,"date":"2023-12-13T23:04:18","date_gmt":"2023-12-13T12:04:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/?p=11883"},"modified":"2024-01-30T03:00:54","modified_gmt":"2024-01-29T16:00:54","slug":"tasmanias-first-tennis-australia-award-in-12-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2023\/12\/13\/tasmanias-first-tennis-australia-award-in-12-years","title":{"rendered":"Tasmania\u2019s first Tennis Australia Award in 12 years"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Tasmanian, Brendon Oliver-Ewen emerged triumphant as the recipient of the prestigious Tennis Australia Volunteer Achievement Award at the 2023 Newcombe Medal, Tennis Australia Awards evening in Melbourne on Monday night.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe are incredibly proud of Brendon\u2019s achievement, which recognises his consistent service and commitment to the sport of tennis in Tasmania throughout the year,\u201d Tennis Tasmania General Manager, Darren Sturgess said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThis is Tasmania\u2019s first Tennis Australia Award in 12 years, having last won the Best Tournament category for the Burnie International in 2010 and 2011.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cBrendon and many others in Hobart have found a sporting home in the local tennis community, because we truly are a very welcoming community,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Brendon has been an integral part of the Hobart Out Tennis community, where his unwavering commitment has significantly contributed to the growth and inclusivity of the club. His efforts in fostering a harmonious bond between diversity, pride, and the LGBTQIA+ community within tennis and broader sporting organisations have garnered widespread recognition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cHobart Out Tennis is the first\u00a0<\/span>LGBTQIA+<span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0sporting club in Tasmania and it\u2019s a mechanism for the community to come together and form relationships and form a role withing Tasmanian society,\u201d Brendon Oliver-Ewen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cI&#8217;m one of so many people who&#8217;ve made this happen; I could easily name 30 people who\u2019ve contributed to the club we&#8217;ve formed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cEvery single person in Hobart Out Tennis recognises that it\u2019s an opportunity for them to be accepted and so they all volunteer their time, their passion, their courage and their authenticity to make the club happen.
