{"id":10002,"date":"2021-03-08T20:31:16","date_gmt":"2021-03-08T09:31:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/?p=10002"},"modified":"2021-03-08T20:37:23","modified_gmt":"2021-03-08T09:37:23","slug":"international-womens-week-focus-arwen-koesmapahlawan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2021\/03\/08\/international-womens-week-focus-arwen-koesmapahlawan","title":{"rendered":"IWW 2021 focus: Arwen Koesmapahlawan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>As part of <\/em><strong><em>International Women\u2019s Week 2021<\/em><\/strong><em> from March 8-14, we&#8217;ll be highlighting strong female leaders in the Tasmanian tennis community.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>International Women&#8217;s Day <\/strong>on March 8, we spoke to <strong>Arwen Koesmapahlawan<\/strong> from Launceston about tennis, leadership, and how she encompasses the IWD2021 theme <strong><em>Choose To Challenge<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arwen is a state tennis representative, year ten prefect at Riverside High School, and a part of Tennis Tasmania\u2019s <strong>Future Leaders<\/strong> program.\u00a0 Arwen endeavours to inspire change and she is not afraid to take the lead in the various areas of her passions.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her love of the game has seen her travel around the state and country to play tournaments, including representing the North at the recent <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/news\/2021\/02\/05\/north-west-claim-tasmanian-tri-series-cup-in-burnie\">Tasmanian Tri-Series Cup<\/a><\/strong>, and she is looking to develop as a tennis coach as part of her future tennis career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would love to inspire the younger generations of girls to play tennis,\u201d Koesmapahlawan said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on an unprecedented year both on and off the\ncourt in 2020, Arwen points out the her involvement in Future Leaders as a\nhighlight and one that developed her resilience and leaderships skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was certainly a challenging year for all and it wasn\u2019t\njust COVID-19 that took affected many peoples\u2019 life last year.\u201d&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDue to some very difficult times that I was going through,\nI wasn\u2019t completely sure I would be able to put myself out there and meet a\nwhole new group of girls.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Program Coordinator Alyssa Hibberd<\/strong> was full of praise for Arwen\u2019s involvement and dedication in recent months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe courage it took Arwen to show up to the program and give all she could was outstanding,\u201d Hibberd said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"750\" height=\"745\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2021\/03\/IWW-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2021\/03\/IWW-1.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2021\/03\/IWW-1-72x72.jpg 72w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/tas\/files\/2021\/03\/IWW-1-175x175.jpg 175w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Future Leaders program, recently run for the first time from October 2020 to January 2021, is for 15-17 year old girls who have a passion for tennis in their community. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Key focuses include\nbuilding self-confidence and connections with others.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The program consisted of a weekend leadership camp discussing important aspects of leadership and finding connections with others, a day learning the foundations of tennis coaching, creating a project plan to help impact a gap in their tennis community, and listening to an inspiring female guest speaker, Alice Hansen, at the celebration event.\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"\"><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arwen\u2019s favourite memory from the leadership camp was the\npersonal connection focus where participants were encouraged to share a story\nabout a symbolic item they had brought along. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe had extremely open and caring conversations even though\nwe had only just met.
