Wednesday February 12th 2014 saw many ladies turn out to support The Annual Charity Day at Kawana Tennis Club. The Ladies on the Committee assisted by some special volunteers help prepare the Club House for the happy event. As usual the Kawana Tennis Club was generous in allowing the use of 8 tennis courts & the club house free of charge. Thank you Kawana Tennis Club for your generosity.

Ladies playing had their names in by 9am & competition tennis commenced at 9:30 am. There were 32 ladies who played 3 sets of really competitive tennis with a well earned break in between sets. Morning tea & fruit was served during the tennis. This was served by three volunteers who attend each year to assist the charity of the day. A special thank you must go to Joan, Karen & Jan who worked in the kitchen to deliver the eats in a timely manner. After the tennis competition was completed a delicious chicken & salad was prepared by them & enjoyed by all in attendance. I must mention that Jan an ex nursing colleague of Carols travelled from Fernvale outside Ipswich to help in the kitchen. Thanks Jan!

During lunch the Guest Speaker Board Member of the nominated charity Sunshine Coast Community Hospice at Doonan. Mrs. Bev Barton gave a most informative talk about the organization. It was a heartwarming story of how this compassionate & necessary charity has progressed since its’ humble beginning. Many questions were asked by the ladies & ably addressed by Bev. Bev thanked Carol & her committee for choosing their charity to receive the profits from the day.

Charity Chairperson Carol Morris thanked Bev for her attendance & her most informative address explaining how people can assist with donations to the OP Shops or by volunteering to assist in these venues. Carol presented Bev with a small gift in appreciation of her attendance.

Some very lucky people went home with some great prizes from the day. Tennis competition Division 1 & 2 winner was Aki Lepper from Witta, with 18 points (well done Aki under trying conditions). There was a tie for second with Barbara Dickson & Cathy Dance, from Caloundra Club, on 15 points.

In Division 3 &4 the winners were Kawana Club Member Sandra Saunders & Maroochydore Member Heather Burt. Each of the winners received a useful prize in recognition of their efforts.

Good Sport Prizes for the day were awarded to Division 1&2 Stacey English from Witta Club & for Veronica Drummond from Maleny Club. Congratulations to all for a very “sporty attitude”, in which the games were played.

The table which was laden with prizes donated by Club Teams for the Cent Sale were then distributed to the luck winners. One table seemed to have a monopoly on the prizes. We will have to organize it better next time!!

The Raffle of an Expressi Coffee Maker was won by Sonya Fenwick from Caloundra Tennis Club. When will we get to sample your technique Sonya?

Second prize of a dazzling white Toaster was won by Heather Burt from Maroochydore Club.

The Lucky Door prize of a basket of fruit & a bottle of wine kindly donated by The Red Apple & Marlene Rice, was won by Wendy Beasleigh from Kawana Tennis Club.

Guessing the number of ANZAC Biscuits made & donated by Carol Morris was won by Witta Club Member Elaine Ticknell. We will all be around for a cuppa & bikkie Elaine!

Lucky Number boards were very popular with the attendees. Winner of the $2 board was Annie Lyons who kindly donated her winnings back to the Charity. Thank you Annie for you kind gesture. Second prize went to Kay Wright from Caloundra Tennis Club & third was won by our volunteer Kitchen Expert Joan Grayson.

Winner of the $1 money board was Sonia Douglas from Witta Tennis Club. Second was won by Dee South from Yandina Tennis Club & third was won by Barbara Dickson from Caloundra Tennis Club.

At the end of proceedings there was a special draw for prizes kindly donated by two businesses on the Sunshine Coast. Michels Patisserie at Kawana Shopping World donated a $30 open voucher & The Rose Room Tea Café, Gympie Terrace, Noosaville donated a voucher for a High Tea valued at $15:50. This added another $43 to the charity coffers.

Also attending the Tennis Day as guest of the committee was the President of the Kawna Tennis Club Col Ackland, one man in a room full of ladies.  Carol & Annie both thanked Col for the generous support the club has been for the Ladies Tennis Committee. Carol presented Col with a box of chocolates which he duly shared with all the ladies present. Col also added that the committee was more than willing to continue to support us into the future. Thank you again Col & your committee.

The ladies in the Culinary Department were also presented with a small gift in appreciation of the work the so capably carried out.

The profits for the day are in the region of $800 to $900 so a great effort by all.

President Annie Lyons thanked Carol for another great Charity Day. This was the 10th very successful tournament Carol has organized. About $!0,000 has been donated to charities from these great social days. The next Charity Day will be in September, so put that in your diary.
