Vale Mavis Martin

It is with sadness we announce the loss of Mavis Martin who was one of the original SCLMWTA ladies. Below is an excerpt from the Witta newsletter.

Mavis joined the Witta Tennis Club in the 1980’s when the club was young. There were only a few members at that time so Mavis, being an experienced player, was very welcome.

As a member of one of the early teams, the Witta Wonders, she played with members Elaine Tincknell, Jill Tedman. Daphne Denning and Jill Murtagh.  In ensuing years she played in other teams including the Witta Warriors and the Witta Hitters in which Mavis played with Jean Murray and Irene Owen amongst others.

Mavis was a great tactician who could read other player’s weaknesses. She had played against nearly all the tennis players in Maleny so would always advise her partner on how to beat the opposition.  We learnt many tennis lessons playing with Mavis.

She was a foundation member of the Sunshine Coast Ladies Midweek Tennis Association when it was formed in 1972.

Mavis continued to be a welcome presence at the Witta club even after her retirement, and was always an honoured guest at the Ladies Christmas luncheon.  Vale our friend Mavis.
