{"id":6862,"date":"2014-01-30T05:46:32","date_gmt":"2014-01-29T20:16:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/?p=6862"},"modified":"2014-01-30T05:46:32","modified_gmt":"2014-01-29T20:16:32","slug":"watervale-sa-and-macclesfieldechunga-sa-win-australian-open-2014","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/news\/2014\/01\/30\/watervale-sa-and-macclesfieldechunga-sa-win-australian-open-2014","title":{"rendered":"Watervale, SA and Macclesfield\/Echunga, SA win Australian Open 2014"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The towns of\u00a0<b>Watervale\u00a0<\/b>and\u00a0<b>Macclesfield\/Echunga,\u00a0<\/b>South Australia, aligned with Australian Open champions\u00a0<b>Li Na<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>Stanislas Wawrinka<\/b>\u00a0have emerged as the winners in the inaugural\u00a0AO Blitz.<\/p>\n<p>As the highest points earners in each town, Aaron Ackland from Watervale and Peter Baraglia from Macclesfield\/Echunga have won a $<b>10,000 ANZ Advantage Access account.<br \/>\n<\/b><br \/>\nWatervale demonstrated their support for Li Na by turning out to a tennis themed\u00a0<b>#Li4Watervale<\/b>\u00a0party at the Watervale Hotel, which included a special screening of the final.<\/p>\n<p>Locals gathered in force to watch Li defeat 20th\u00a0seed Dominika Cibulkova, who\u2019s AO Blitz support town was Warren in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My motivation behind joining the AO Blitz was my children,&#8221; Aaron Ackland, Captain of the Watervale Tennis Club said.&#8221;I&#8217;d love to see our local courts restored and be there for years to come.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I could spend the money in so many ways but the most obvious for me would be to donate a portion to Watervale&#8217;s new courts fund. It has been a great motivator for our tennis club and community as we are in fundraising mode to replace our ageing courts,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Completing challenges has brought many laughs and lots of enthusiasm to our club, with lots of interest from community members on what we are up to.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Macclesfield\/Echunga staged their own\u00a0<b>#Wawrinka4Macclesfield-Echunga<\/b>\u00a0party at the Macclesfield Sporting Complex last night, with the small South Australian community cheering Wawrinka on to his first Australian Open crown.<\/p>\n<p>He defeated world No.\u00a01 Rafael Nadal who has received vocal support from the top AO Blitz town, Kendall in New South Wales.<\/p>\n<p>Baraglia, Macclesfield Tennis Club vice-president was thrilled with the outcome.<br \/>\n\u201cThe AO Blitz has been a good ride, as I&#8217;m sure it was for all towns. We were just lucky to get Stan. It started as a bit of fun and has been like a merry-go-round, lots of highs and lows.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peter Baraglia completed 33 AO Blitz challenges online, earning a total of 330,725 points for his town.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;All the club members got into it and enjoyed it,&#8221; Baraglia said. &#8220;It has been an experience and injected so much enthusiasm into our club &#8211; it has given us a whole new lease on life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My wife has suggested to we go to Switzerland seeing as Stan won for us,&#8221; Baraglia said when quizzed on how he\u2019d spend his winnings.<\/p>\n<p>The AO Blitz is a national campaign designed to get more people playing tennis.
