{"id":29338,"date":"2023-08-17T22:12:50","date_gmt":"2023-08-17T12:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/?p=29338"},"modified":"2023-08-18T00:26:43","modified_gmt":"2023-08-17T14:56:43","slug":"city-of-playford-tennis-international-to-return-in-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/news\/2023\/08\/17\/city-of-playford-tennis-international-to-return-in-october","title":{"rendered":"City of Playford Tennis International to return in October"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The\u00a0<strong>City of Playford Tennis International <\/strong>will return to Playford Tennis Centre for its fifth edition from Sunday 22 to Sunday 29 October 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The Australian Pro Tour event, a combined men\u2019s ATP Challenger and women\u2019s ITF World Tennis Tour tournament will offer a total prize pool of more than AUD $200,000 and valuable world ranking points.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis SA and Tennis Australia will host the tournament in conjunction with the City of Playford, TennisGear and Playford Tennis Club.<\/p>\n<p>Previous competitors include 2022 Wimbledon champion and 2023 Australian Open finalist <strong>Elena Rybakina<\/strong>, 2019 US Open champion <strong>Bianca Andreescu<\/strong> and multiple Grand Slam singles finalist <strong>Casper Ruud<\/strong> have competed at this event.<\/p>\n<p>Closer to home, defending champions <strong>Kimberly Birrell<\/strong> (Qld) and <strong>Rinky Hijikata <\/strong>(NSW) have rocketed up the race to both reach career high singles rankings of 110 in recent months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are thrilled to have the Australian Pro Tour return to the Playford Tennis Centre in 2023 for the fifth time,\u201d Tennis Australia\u2019s Pro Tour Manager <strong>Fiona Luscombe <\/strong>said.<strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of Playford Tennis International provides a great opportunity for players preparing for the Australian summer of tennis and the tournament has built its reputation as a favourite amongst the players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to the City of Playford for their continued support, a tournament of this calibre would simply not be possible without it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>City of Playford Mayor Glenn Docherty<\/strong>\u00a0said the tournament in the heart of Playford\u2019s Sports Precinct will be one of the highlights of the city\u2019s sporting calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOff the back of the City of Playford\u2019s role in this year\u2019s FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup in hosting the Panama Women\u2019s National Football team, we are delighted to welcome another international standard sport event to the Playford Sports Precinct,\u201c said Mayor Docherty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe City of Playford Tennis International has gained a reputation as the champion maker of tennis tournaments, with past players going on to hit the big time on the world circuit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes players such as Elena Rybakina who won the Wimbledon Grand Slam title last year, current world No.3 Daniil Medvedev, world No.7 Casper Ruud and 2019 US Open winner Bianca Andreescu.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are very proud that the Playford Tennis Centre is one of the few venues in Australia with the capacity to host both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s events concurrently, particularly outside of a major capital city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 2023 City of Playford Tennis International will see professional men and women players compete across the week and we invite our community to enjoy the free tournament.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennis SA CEO\u00a0<strong>Debbie Sterrey <\/strong>added: \u201cWe are thrilled to announce that the City of Playford Tennis International will return once again in 2023.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA sincere thank you goes to the City of Playford for their unwavering support of this tournament.
