{"id":27937,"date":"2022-12-13T18:19:21","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T07:49:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/?p=27937"},"modified":"2022-12-13T20:54:27","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T10:24:27","slug":"record-breaking-haul-for-south-australia-at-2022-newcombe-medal-australian-tennis-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/news\/2022\/12\/13\/record-breaking-haul-for-south-australia-at-2022-newcombe-medal-australian-tennis-awards","title":{"rendered":"Record breaking haul for South Australia at 2022 Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Australia claimed a record breaking four awards at the <strong>2022\u00a0Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Awards<\/strong> held at the Palladium at Crown in Melbourne on Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>On a night that recognises players, coaches, clubs, communities, volunteers and officials for their service to the sport, South Australia took out the <strong>Coaching Excellence &#8211; Club, Junior Athlete of the Year &#8211; Male<\/strong>,<strong> Excellence in Officiating<\/strong> and <strong>Volunteer Achievement<\/strong> awards.<\/p>\n<p><strong>David Grainger<\/strong>, <strong>Edward Winter<\/strong>, <strong>Robyn Tucker <\/strong>and <strong>Julie Polkinghorne<\/strong>\u00a0were each recognised for their commitment and dedication to tennis in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Henley South Tennis Club Head Coach <strong>David Grainger<\/strong> was announced as winner of the Coaching Excellence &#8211; Club category.<\/p>\n<p>With the goal of making tennis fun, Grainger creates a welcoming environment where players have the maximum opportunity to participate and achieve success regardless of their age, ability or background.<\/p>\n<p>This is Grainger\u2019s second Newcombe Medal, Australian Tennis Award having won the Coaching Excellence &#8211; Tennis Hot Shots award in 2013. It is also the third award in five years for Henley South Tennis Club after being named as the Most Outstanding Tennis Club in 2018 and Darren Wunderer receiving the Volunteer Achievement Award in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was an honour to be nominated, I had no idea that I would come away with this award,\u201d Grainger said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would like to acknowledge all of the other coaches who have been nominated for this award. I am very honoured to be selected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27929\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97474.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3865\" height=\"5798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97474.jpg 3865w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97474-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97474-512x768.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3865px) 100vw, 3865px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After being a finalist in 2021, <strong>Edward Winter<\/strong> was named as the winner of the Junior Athlete of the Year &#8211; Male category.<\/p>\n<p>Winter reached a career high ITF Junior world ranking of 66 in April 2022 and played at each of the four junior Grand Slams, including main draw appearances at the Australian Open, Wimbledon and US Open. Winter won his first ITF World Tennis Tour singles title in Traralgon last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really excited. There are so many great past names who have won this award,\u201d Winter said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am really thrilled and honoured to be here and to receive this award.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27930 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3684\" height=\"5322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97481.jpg 3684w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97481-768x1109.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97481-532x768.jpg 532w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3684px) 100vw, 3684px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It was second time lucky for <strong>Robyn Tucker<\/strong> in the Excellence in Officiating category.<\/p>\n<p>Tucker is a dedicated and professional tennis official who has risen through the ranks of officiating in Australia. Earlier this year she attended the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Level 3 Officiating School in Orlando, Florida, returning as an ITF Silver Badge Referee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is amazing. The two nominees I was up against, I know very well and they are such nice guys who are very good at their jobs,\u201d Tucker said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have always been involved in tennis. I got in to officiating and I have loved every moment of it, I love helping the sport of tennis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-27931\" src=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97490.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"3862\" height=\"5350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97490.jpg 3862w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97490-768x1064.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/files\/2022\/12\/97490-554x768.jpg 554w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 3862px) 100vw, 3862px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After 20 years at Port Lincoln Tennis Association, <strong>Julie Polkinghorne<\/strong> was announced as the winner of the Volunteer Achievement Award, seeing this award return to South Australia for the third time in five years.<\/p>\n<p>Polkinghorne has been a tireless volunteer, with key projects including player pathway, facility redevelopment, business planning and access to coaching, as well as being a driving force behind the inaugural Tennis SA State League All Stars event in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is amazing.
