{"id":27687,"date":"2022-10-30T17:34:29","date_gmt":"2022-10-30T07:04:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/?p=27687"},"modified":"2022-10-30T17:34:29","modified_gmt":"2022-10-30T07:04:29","slug":"rinky-hijikata-and-kimberly-birrell-take-home-city-of-playford-tennis-international-titles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/news\/2022\/10\/30\/rinky-hijikata-and-kimberly-birrell-take-home-city-of-playford-tennis-international-titles","title":{"rendered":"Rinky Hijikata and Kimberly Birrell take home City of Playford Tennis International titles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Rinky Hijikata<\/strong> (NSW) and <strong>Kimberly Birrell<\/strong> (Qld) are the 2022 City of Playford Tennis International champions after taking out the singles titles in Elizabeth East, South Australia today.<\/p>\n<p>After making his ATP Challenger Tour debut at Playford in 2019, fifth seed Hijikata defeated sixth seed <strong>Rio Noguchi<\/strong> (JPN) 6-1 6-1 to claim his maiden ATP Challenger Tour title.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty one-year-old Hijikata is the youngest Australian to win an ATP Challenger Tour title since 2018, when a 19-year-old <strong>Alexei Popyrin<\/strong> (NSW) won in Jinan, China.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am just over the moon. It\u2019s a little bit of a relief to get my first title, it\u2019s not easy to get over that hump so to be able to do that this week and at home in Australia as well, I am pretty proud of the way I played this week,\u201d Hijikata said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a great week, it\u2019s nice to be back home in Australia. I haven\u2019t played here since the start of the year, so it feels great to be back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the women\u2019s side, <strong>Kimberly Birrell<\/strong> (Qld) defeated <strong>Maddison Inglis<\/strong> (WA) 3-6 7-5 6-4, overcoming two rain delays and some wild weather conditions to take the win in just under three hours.<\/p>\n<p>The win saw Birrell claim her first singles title since 2018 and follows two-and-a-half years away from the sport due to an elbow injury.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt means so much to win here in Playford. I\u2019ve had a really tough couple of years and to be honest, I didn\u2019t know if I was going to be able to play tennis again, let alone make it back to this level,\u201d Birrell said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am just so happy to have made it to the end of the tournament.
