{"id":16957,"date":"2019-01-23T07:46:26","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T21:16:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/?p=16957"},"modified":"2019-01-31T20:37:22","modified_gmt":"2019-01-31T10:07:22","slug":"alex-de-minaur-to-lead-aussie-davis-cup-team-in-adelaide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/news\/2019\/01\/23\/alex-de-minaur-to-lead-aussie-davis-cup-team-in-adelaide","title":{"rendered":"Alex de Minaur to lead Aussie Davis Cup team in Adelaide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s <strong>Alex de Minaur <\/strong>will lead the Aussie charge at the upcoming <strong>Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Qualifier <\/strong>between <strong>Australia<\/strong> and <strong>Bosnia and Herzegovina <\/strong>on hard court at Memorial Drive in Adelaide next week from 1 to 2 February 2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>John Millman<\/strong>, <strong>Jordan Thompson<\/strong>, doubles specialist <strong>John Peers<\/strong> and in-form <strong>Alexei Popyrin<\/strong> will join de Minaur to make up the five-man team.<\/p>\n<p>De Minaur\u2019s nomination caps off a huge 12 months having risen up the rankings from 208 to 29 and winning his first ATP title in Sydney a couple of weeks ago.<\/p>\n<p>Nineteen-year-old Popyrin has been named as the fifth player in the team and travels to Adelaide after delivering a career best showing at the Australian Open last week.<\/p>\n<p>In only his second Grand Slam appearance, the newcomer defeated Mischa Zverev and world No.8 Dominic Thiem before succumbing to No.28 seed Lucas Pouille.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Alex Bolt<\/strong>, 26, who hails from Murray Bridge in South Australia, will also head to Adelaide for the qualifying tie.<\/p>\n<p>Bolt recorded his best Grand Slam result in Melbourne defeating wildcard Jack Sock and No.29 seed Gilles Simon in five sets before going down to world No.4 Alexander Zverev in the third round.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Davis Cup captain <strong>Lleyton Hewitt <\/strong>said the team were looking forward to building on the results of the last couple of weeks in Adelaide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDe Minaur has had an incredible start to the year winning his maiden ATP title in Sydney and making the third round of the Aussie Open,\u201d Hewitt said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPopyrin showed us he can match it with the top players and it was pleasing to see him do so well in only his second appearance at a Grand Slam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJohn Millman and Jordan Thompson will bring experience to the team as will John Peers who is contesting his ninth Grand Slam men\u2019s doubles quarterfinal tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to also bring Alex Bolt along to Adelaide after his impressive run last week.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur focus will now shift towards preparing for the tie and as a team we\u2019re excited to bring Davis Cup tennis back to Adelaide for the first time in 15 years,\u201d Hewitt added.<\/p>\n<p>Play will start at <strong>4.00 pm local time<\/strong> on <strong>Friday<\/strong> and <strong>3.00 pm local time<\/strong> on <strong>Saturday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Single session tickets and two-day packages are on sale via <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ticketek.com.au\/\">Ticketek<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tie fast facts<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This is the first Davis Cup meeting between <strong>Australia <\/strong>and<strong> Bosnia and Herzegovina<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The tie will mark the first time in <strong>15 years<\/strong> since <strong>Adelaide<\/strong>,<strong> South Australia<\/strong> has hosted a Davis Cup tie<\/li>\n<li>The last time Adelaide hosted a Davis Cup tie was in <strong>2004<\/strong>, with Australia beaten 4-1 by Sweden in a World Group First Round tie<\/li>\n<li>Australian Davis Cup captain<strong> Lleyton Hewitt<\/strong> was a member of the team in Adelaide in 2004<\/li>\n<li>South Australia is home to some of Australia\u2019s tennis greats including <strong>Lleyton Hewitt<\/strong>, <strong>John Fitzgerald<\/strong>, <strong>Mark Woodforde <\/strong>and the late<strong> Ken McGregor<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The two teams will play for one of 12 spots at the revamped Davis Cup finals and join Croatia, France, United States, Spain and wildcards Argentina and Great Britain, from 18 to 24 November in Madrid, Spain<\/li>\n<li>The new-look Davis Cup format will see the best of three-set matches take place over two days with two singles matches played on Friday, and a doubles match and the reverse singles played on Saturday.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Australia\u2019s Alex de Minaur will lead the Aussie charge at the upcoming Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Qualifier between Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina on hard court at Memorial Drive in Adelaide next week from 1 to 2 February 2019.
