{"id":16295,"date":"2018-11-29T07:00:35","date_gmt":"2018-11-28T20:30:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/?p=16295"},"modified":"2018-11-29T07:00:35","modified_gmt":"2018-11-28T20:30:35","slug":"adelaide-to-host-2019-davis-cup-qualifier","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/news\/2018\/11\/29\/adelaide-to-host-2019-davis-cup-qualifier","title":{"rendered":"Adelaide to host 2019 Davis Cup Qualifier"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>South Australia will host the <strong>Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Qualifier <\/strong>between <strong>Australia<\/strong> and <strong>Bosnia and Herzegovina <\/strong>on hard court at Memorial Drive in Adelaide from 1 to 2 February 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Home to some of Australia\u2019s tennis greats including\u00a0<strong>Lleyton Hewitt<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>John Fitzgerald<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Mark Woodforde\u00a0<\/strong>and the late<strong>\u00a0Ken McGregor<\/strong>, it will be the first time in 15 years that the state has hosted a Davis Cup tie.<\/p>\n<p>The two teams will meet for the first time when they play for one of 12 spots at the revamped Davis Cup finals, joining Croatia, France, United States, Spain and wildcards Argentina and Great Britain among 18 nations in Madrid, Spain, from 18 to 24 November.<\/p>\n<p>The new-look Davis Cup format will see the best of three-set matches take place over two days, with two singles matches played on Friday, and a doubles match and the reverse singles played on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The last time Adelaide hosted a Davis Cup tie was in 2004, with Australia beaten 4-1 by Sweden in a World Group First Round tie.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Davis Cup captain<strong>\u00a0Lleyton Hewitt<\/strong>\u00a0was a member of the team in Adelaide in 2004.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s so much tennis history in South Australia and it\u2019s home to a number of our great Davis Cup players,\u201d he said. \u201cIt will be fantastic to return to my home city and see Adelaide host this event in February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember playing against the Swedes in 2004 in front of a passionate home crowd and I know the fans will be out in force to support the Aussies in action after such a long break between Davis Cup ties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tennis SA CEO<strong>\u00a0Steve Baldas<\/strong>\u00a0added, \u201cWe are delighted Memorial Drive in Adelaide has been chosen to put on the first Davis Cup qualifier between Australia andBosnia and Herzegovina next February.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdelaide hasn\u2019t hosted a Davis Cup tie for 15 years, so it\u2019s exciting to give our loyal tennis community here in South Australia the opportunity to come along and support the nation\u2019s best male tennis players.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>South Australian Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment\u00a0<strong>David Ridgway<\/strong>\u00a0said staging a Davis Cup tie is a huge drawcard on South Australia\u2019s enviable major events and sporting calendar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is going to be special, it\u2019s the first Davis Cup tie to be held in Adelaide in 15 years,\u201d Minister Ridgway said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s more than bringing international tennis back to South Australia, it\u2019s an opportunity to inspire the next generation of tennis champions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Two-day tickets go on sale at\u00a0<strong>12pm (local time) Friday 30 December 2018\u00a0<\/strong>via\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ticketek.com.au\/\">Ticketek<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Ticket packages are from $72 for adults, $18 for children and $162 for a family pass.<\/p>\n<p>Team nominations will be announced 10 days out from the tie.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>South Australia will host the Davis Cup by BNP Paribas Qualifier between Australia and Bosnia and Herzegovina on hard court at Memorial Drive in Adelaide from 1 to 2 February 2019.
