{"id":12982,"date":"2017-07-09T17:11:35","date_gmt":"2017-07-09T07:41:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/?p=12982"},"modified":"2017-10-13T14:55:27","modified_gmt":"2017-10-13T04:25:27","slug":"memorial-drive-transformation-moves-a-step-closer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/sa\/news\/2017\/07\/09\/memorial-drive-transformation-moves-a-step-closer","title":{"rendered":"Memorial Drive transformation moves a step closer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The transformation of the Memorial Drive sporting precinct got one step closer to realisation today with members of the Memorial Drive Tennis Club voting to proceed with the redevelopment proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Tennis SA CEO <strong>Steven Baldas<\/strong> described the occasion as a very exciting day for tennis in South Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe proposed Memorial Drive redevelopment will transform Adelaide\u2019s sporting precinct whilst preserving the heritage and legacy of this great site for years to come,&#8221; Mr Baldas said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Today&#8217;s decision will enable Tennis SA to pursue its strategic mission to get more people playing tennis more often as well as supporting the next generation of tennis champions by providing state-of-the-art training facilities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Memorial Drive facilities have produced many world-class tennis players over the years including Lleyton Hewitt, John Fitzgerald, Mark Woodforde, Ken McGregor, Alicia Molik and Thanasi Kokkinakis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Memorial Drive redevelopment in Adelaide | Tennis Australia\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_PsiMDaD2S4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Stage 1 fast facts<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The <strong>$9.79<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>million<\/strong> <strong>Stage 1<\/strong> project includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <strong>new outdoor show court<\/strong> and <strong>two new match courts<\/strong> to enable more world class events, such as Davis Cup and Fed Cup, to be hosted in Adelaide<\/li>\n<li><strong>A state-of-the-art National Academy training venue<\/strong> with all three Grand Slam surfaces \u2013 <strong>clay, grass <\/strong>and<strong> hardcourt<\/strong> \u2013 so South Australia can continue to produce world class players<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>Walk of Champions<\/strong> profiling the historical position of the site and South Australia\u2019s tennis legends<\/li>\n<li><strong>Resurfacing of current match courts<\/strong> to ensure the venue can continue to host tournaments such as the World Tennis Challenge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><em>Memorial Drive vision<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Memorial Drive redevelopment will bring life and energy to the area and the surrounding Riverbank Precinct 365 days of the year and includes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Australia\u2019s newest tennis complex and a new destination for significant international matches, such as Davis Cup and Fed Cup, Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) and Women\u2019s Tennis Association (WTA) events<\/li>\n<li>A desirable location for the world\u2019s tennis elite to visit and compete in the lead-up to the Australian Open<\/li>\n<li>A preferred practice base for Australia\u2019s tennis elite providing <strong>three of the world\u2019s Grand Slam<\/strong> <strong>court surfaces<\/strong>, one of only two complexes within Australia to do so, enabling athletes to train in their home environment<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>high performance academy<\/strong> training environment<\/li>\n<li><strong>South Australia\u2019s first \u201call weather arena\u201d<\/strong> with a state of the art \u201cWimbledon style\u201d retractable roof and crowd seating design, creating the ultimate atmosphere to attract small to medium concerts and events to the Riverbank precinct<\/li>\n<li>Spaces for new cafes and offices, with potential to accommodate other sports or attract corporate headquarters from interstate or overseas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Realising this vision will ensure Tennis SA\u2019s financial sustainability by allowing the organisation to diversify revenue streams and become commercially viable, reducing its reliance on government funding for future operations.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The transformation of the Memorial Drive sporting precinct got one step closer to realisation today with members of the Memorial Drive Tennis Club voting to proceed with the redevelopment proposal.
