Published 20 May 2016<\/em><\/p>\n<p>More than 500 tennis enthusiasts\u00a0travelled from far and wide to\u00a0attend the 29th Tennis Seniors\u00a0Teams Carnival last weekend.\u00a0The three-day tournament\u00a0kicked off on Saturday with 99\u00a0teams taking to courts in Berri,\u00a0Renmark, Barmera and Loxton.\u00a0The event is for competitors over\u00a0the age of 35. The oldest competitor\u00a0was 85.<\/p>\n<p>Carnival co-organiser Kaye\u00a0Tanner said the event was cut short\u00a0on Monday when the heavens\u00a0opened, but overall it ran smoothly.\u00a0\u201cIt was a really great weekend,\u201d\u00a0she said.\u00a0\u201cIt was just a matter of getting\u00a0people to different courts.\u201d\u00a0Just nine of the 99 registered\u00a0teams were made up of locals.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had 90 teams travel from\u00a0elsewhere,\u201d said Mrs Tanner.\u00a0\u201cThe teams came mostly from\u00a0Adelaide, and then we always\u00a0get four or five teams from the\u00a0Northern Areas.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re gradually getting more\u00a0from interstate. We had competitors\u00a0from NSW, the ACT, Queensland\u00a0and Victoria.\u00a0\u201cWe even had four people come\u00a0from New Zealand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey competitors really enjoy\u00a0it. They think it\u2019s a great social\u00a0event.\u201d\u00a0Mrs Tanner said the influx of\u00a0visitors provided an economic\u00a0boost to the region.\u00a0\u201cThey would have brought\u00a0some money into the Riverland\u00a0that\u2019s for sure,\u201d she said.\u00a0\u201cBecause it\u2019s a three-day tournament\u00a0a lot of the competitors stay\u00a0for four or five nights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Riverland was represented\u00a0by 42 women across seven teams,\u00a0along with two men\u2019s teams.\u00a0Local team The Raqueteers,\u00a0made up of Georgia Tzanavaris,\u00a0Karen Rubarth, Gioia Perre, Sarah\u00a0Haslett and Tracey Jaensch, won\u00a0the 35+ age group for the second\u00a0year running.<\/p>\n<p>The Riverettes, consisting of\u00a0Kaye Tanner, Faye Brodie, Raylene\u00a0Couzens, Ellen Traeger and Judy\u00a0Woods, were equal winners in\u00a0Section B in the 65+ age group.\u00a0The River Belles were second\u00a0in the 60+ age group, with team\u00a0members Jessie Symens, Pamela\u00a0Kerley, Jill Harris, Sue Fox and\u00a0Carita Brown only losing one\u00a0match.<\/p>\n<p>The Mallee Bulls, made up of\u00a0Shane Semmler, Adrian Fielke,\u00a0Peter French, David Watson,\u00a0David McDonald and Murray\u00a0Fitzclarence, came second in 40+\u00a0age group, division one, section B.\u00a0Funds raised will go towards the\u00a0Berri-view Lawn Tennis Club.\u00a0Renmark, Barmera and Loxton\u00a0Tennis Clubs received hire fees\u00a0from court use.<\/p>\n<p><em>The\u00a0Raqueteers\u00a0won the\u00a035-plus\u00a0section at\u00a0the Tennis\u00a0Seniors Team\u00a0Carnival on\u00a0the weekend.<\/em><br \/>\n<em> Pictured are\u00a0Sarah Haslett\u00a0(left), Karen\u00a0Rubath,\u00a0Gioia Perre,\u00a0Georgia\u00a0Tzanavaras,\u00a0Tracey\u00a0Jaensch.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Jane Kuerschner, Murray Pioneer.
