Sam Stosur has been forced to withdraw from the US Open because of injury. The 33 year-old had been hoping to be ready for the final Grand Slam of the season, but is still struggling with the stress fracture that she sustained at Roland Garros.

“Obviously I am extremely disappointed to have to pull out of the US Open,” Stosur said in a short statement.

“The US Open holds such special memories for me and it is a tournament I really look forward to every year.

“It will be tough to miss another Grand Slam, but while my hand is slowly getting better I know it is in my best interest to keep rehabilitating it.

“I am practicing but unfortunately still feeling some pain on certain shots.”

The 2011 US Open champion suffered a stress fracture in her right hand during the French Open. She had hoped to make a comeback at next week’s event in New Haven, but was forced to pull out because of the injury.

The US Open will begin on Monday 28 August in New York City.
