{"id":7083,"date":"2021-04-16T16:15:43","date_gmt":"2021-04-16T06:45:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nt\/?p=7083"},"modified":"2021-04-16T16:16:07","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T06:46:07","slug":"tennis-the-new-life-mission-for-tristan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nt\/news\/2021\/04\/16\/tennis-the-new-life-mission-for-tristan","title":{"rendered":"Tennis the new life mission for Tristan"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p>Tristan Orchard broke his back in 2019 and has fallen in love with the game of tennis.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>TRISTAN Orchard fell in love with tennis at a crucial time in his life.<\/p>\n<p>A serious spinal injury had left him a paraplegic with six months of rehabilitation work ahead of him.<\/p>\n<p>But when the 21-year-old was introduced to tennis as part of his recovery, a fierce desire to succeed set in.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDuring the rehab a guy from tennis came in among other sports and I kind of fell in love with it straight away,\u2019\u2019 Orchard told the NT News.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter Adelaide I got some contacts up here, met my coach Sam (Giess) and started going for it properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s physical and most of the rules are the same, except for one rule change where you get two bounces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s something that\u2019s addictive and now I want to prove to everyone I can play the game and do it well.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Orchard, a big fan of seven-time Australian Open singles wheelchair champion Dylan Alcott, wants to make tennis a big part of his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s the goal, to play professional tennis and participate in the Paralympics,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something I can really go for and I feel really confident I can do it.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Orchard will attend a oneday development camp in Cairns, where top players from Queensland and Australia will be in attendance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThen there\u2019s another camp in Brisbane in June I\u2019m looking forward to learning more from,\u2019\u2019 he added.<\/p>\n<p>Giess got involved with his new charge in October, 2019 when a tennis hooked Orchard arrived back in Darwin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTristan started his tennis program in Adelaide, but once he was coming home the guy running the show got in contact with Tennis NT to ask if there was anyone keen to work with a wheelchair player,\u2019\u2019 Giess said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put my hand up and yes, absolutely, and I\u2019ve worked with Tristan ever since.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Giess said movement was the key in wheelchair tennis as opposed to serving and ground strokes that were similar to able bodied players.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a bit of education on my part to make sure I understand it all and go through it with Tristan,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Picture: Katrina Bridgeford<\/p>\n<p>Story: NT News<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Tristan Orchard broke his back in 2019 and has fallen in love with the game of tennis.
