{"id":27295,"date":"2025-09-01T09:48:28","date_gmt":"2025-08-31T23:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nsw\/?p=27295"},"modified":"2025-09-01T09:59:48","modified_gmt":"2025-08-31T23:59:48","slug":"world-class-tennis-comes-to-regional-nsw-with-inaugural-wagga-wagga-tennis-international-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.tennis.com.au\/nsw\/news\/2025\/09\/01\/world-class-tennis-comes-to-regional-nsw-with-inaugural-wagga-wagga-tennis-international-2","title":{"rendered":"World-class tennis comes to regional NSW with inaugural Wagga Wagga Tennis International"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Wagga Wagga is preparing to showcase world-class tennis this September, with the city set to host its first-ever Australian Pro Tour event \u2013 the Wagga Wagga Tennis International.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taking place across two weeks from Sunday 7 September to Sunday 21 September, the tournament will feature consecutive Women\u2019s 35 International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour events, staged at the newly redeveloped Jim Elphick Tennis Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The venue, which reopened in April this year, now boasts ITF-standard cushioned acrylic hard courts and upgraded facilities, enabling international tennis to be staged in regional NSW.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputy Mayor of the City of Wagga Wagga, Councillor Georgie Davies, said it was exciting to see an international-level event come to the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe redevelopment of the Jim Elphick Tennis Centre is already producing benefits for our city as it is set to host the Wagga Wagga Tennis International,\u201d Cr Davies said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHosting this tournament is a great opportunity for the people of Wagga Wagga and surrounds to enjoy some world-class tennis without having to go to one of the major cities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe event also brings with it the opportunity for the local economy to benefit from the extra visitors to town.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wagga Wagga Tennis International is expected to attract a strong line-up of Australian and international female athletes, competing for more than AUD $60,000 in prize money and valuable world ranking points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHosting international tennis in regional centres such as Wagga Wagga delivers benefits far beyond prize money and ranking points,\u201d said Lawrence Robertson, Tennis Australia Director of Pathways &amp; Tennis Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese events provide a platform to promote our sport and get more people playing tennis more often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe Wagga Wagga Tennis International will deliver significant economic value \u2013 more than $1 million in this case \u2013 while also providing a fantastic opportunity to engage the local community, showcase our sport, and inspire more people to pick up a racquet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tennis NSW CEO Darren Simpson added, \u201cThis Pro Tour event showcases the strength of regional NSW as a sporting destination and underscores our commitment to delivering high-performance opportunities right across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re proud to support an event that will inspire the next generation of players and leave a lasting legacy for tennis in the region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wagga Wagga Tennis International forms part of the Australian Pro Tour, a series of professional tournaments staged throughout the year to connect emerging players with the WTA Tour, offering the chance to earn world ranking points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event will take place at the Jim Elphick Tennis Centre, Bolton Park, Wagga Wagga, from Sunday 7 September to Sunday 21 September.
